Before you complain about the screen try actually using the phone. The screen works great and is quite sensitive, if you're not overlapping the edge with your finger while holding it you won't have any trouble.

That trackball is often quite useful too. Considering I owned an iPhone 3gs before getting my N1 I actually know what I'm talking about here. Sense was great when android was immature and needed that extra gui oomph to get it rolling..but now with 2.1 and 2.2 coming, it's really not needed anymore. You buy the N1, sign up for an at&t plan, and you don't get a discounted plan even though they didn't fork over the subsidies. You can't keep the phone and pop in a sim for someone else.
