Remember that these are portable speakers that run off the same Li-ion batery that your phone does. For their size and weight they do pretty well. No, at least not the first version. They advertised it as good enough for group music listening around a pool, etc, but it is nowhere near loud enough for that sort of use - I use it on the center console of a truck that doesn't have a radio, you can hear it well IF the road noise is not too loud

I used my Solar Sound 1 in the park last week and it worked fine for us.

btw, if you know 'exactly how it is built,' then why are you so surprised at the volume coming from a 2x 2w speaker system running off a 3.7V battery?
