We wanted a decent quality video recorder that we could have out at the pool without worrying that it might get splashed. We've had quite a bit of fun with it. The picture quality is certainly acceptable, especially for $130 ( what it can be found for online). We did have to return the first one we bought, as it had a few stuck-on pixels in the sensor (every video had annoying bright spots).

Overall, we're happy with our purchase. Don't buy this expecting studio quality HD videos. Buy this as a decent quality point and shoot that can go underwater. We seem to shoot in 720p60 most of the time. The 1080p mode just seems to be the same quality as 720p, stretched to 1080 resolution.

FloridoNet: the image stabilization seems to work pretty well. I've noticed that it does a better job on 30fps modes than the 720p60 mode. It works especially well when zoomed way in, which makes sense, as the camera would have more edge content to work with.

Shaun

Comments on Kodak PlaySport Zx3 waterproof HD camera review

This a good little camera, I used it for a week in disneyland with my kids, it took decent videos, it didn,t mind the water from splash mountain, also the face detection and image stabilization worked well, The 5mp still shots turned out pretty good, not going to replace my dslr but a lot nicer to carry around for 9hrs then my dslr bag.

Geoff

Comments on Kodak PlaySport Zx3 waterproof HD camera review

I just got one of these for a vacation. It's not the best camera I've ever used in terms of quality, but it really isn't bad at all for the price (only $129 on Amazon). It is one of the only ones of these type of small cameras that has any type of image stabilization and it doesn't work great, but it definitely helps. I find the UI to be pretty simple and the 'd-pad' makes sense after you use it once or twice.I like the fact that there is no screen to flip out, etc. You can leave it in your pocket, pull it out and it is almost instantly ready to go when you hit the power button. What more could you expect from this type of camera?

Johnny

Comments on Kodak PlaySport Zx3 waterproof HD camera review

I'll stick with my already-available Pentax Optio W90.
It can go underwater, and more. I took a few videos with it so far. Nothing fancy by any means. Search andrewjohn81 on youtube. The canoeing videos and latest softball clip, were done last night. The softball one is 1080, the canoe was 720.
Battery lasts just over an hour at full 1080 with EIS turned on. I haven't tested life with it turned off.
The mountain bike clip is also with that. I used a gorilla pod stuck through my helmet vents to mount it up there. It was mostly an experiment, but it turned out to work better than I expected (my expectations were quite low). The gorilla pod doesn't really keep it from swaying around a bunch, so it is Very bouncy. It worked well on the front of the canoe though.
Those were edited with Premiere pro (i have it at work and they have a home use license) but I didn't do anything fancy. Even with that pro software and quad core i7, with a decent processor, it was still a pain to edit. Premiere processes the video to a simpler format for editing. I was done editing the softball clip (it was an hour) before it was done converting.
Windows movie maker has to do the same thing, but it will look stuck until the movie is editable (which could be a couple hours because I don't think it's multithreading nor 64bit). Premiere CS4 isn't 64bit either but was still somehow using 5.5gigs of memory. I thought 32bit apps were limited to 4GB even if they ran on 64bit OS. I guess I was wrong.

Andy Engelkemier

Comments on Kodak PlaySport Zx3 waterproof HD camera review

@andrewjohn81
Thanks for pointing that out.

mschaffer

Comments on Kodak PlaySport Zx3 waterproof HD camera review

I have the Playsport for personal use and the Zi8 for work. But you can put it underwater"
HAHAHAHAHAH, i totaly love the honestness, i just bought a ZX1 today for $49 bucks from woot, but for my mom. i would touch a stick camcorder with a ten foot pole, not yet at least. i dont care who makes it, you just cant get the quality out of those buggers, theres allways some sort of hitch or gimmick yet they still seem to be charging 3-600 bucks for em? its like were going back to digital camera days where theyre fumbling around with the megapixels and fuzzy math with interpolation and other bs numbers, digital zoom my arse, its all gimmicks thats useless. they trick you thinking a 14mp digital cam is gonna be awesome but then you realize the 8mp full frame sensor will take a dump on that 14mp from a tiny sensor. just like 720 and 1080 one those flip style cams looks like junk compared to a real hd cam. unless you stabalize it with a stand, stick it in full sunlight and dont move anything in front of it.

chris

Comments on Kodak PlaySport Zx3 waterproof HD camera review

I've had this camera for a couple of months now and I'm very happy with it.
