The in Europe the video calling in integrated in the phone (usually dumb phones) so you receive video calls in the same way you would a phone call. With the EVO it seems video calling is done through specific apps so does that mean you need skype etc running in the background to receive a call? Yes on feature phones you're limited to 3G video calls. Here in Europe they didn't take off usually due to the cost of data in the early days and the carriers insistence to still charge you as if it was a voice call. Pretty much every phone had a front facing camera but no one used them.<br><br>By the time the iPhone ushered in free data plans it was too late.<br><br>Now we have internet connected phones, like my old N95, that can also run apps. I had Fring and I could use the front cam to make video calls but...I just never did. skype never really put out a decent official app that included it's video calling, but with the new iPhone that will obviously change.<br><br>The thing is, once something is on iPhone it'll become popular. I guess you would have to keep the app open in the background. I would rather have an integrated solution so my phone would just ring with incoming video call. <br><br>I hate to say it but Apple is probably going to do this integrate video calling in the main dialer this way every iphone user can call each other without having to worry about having the person they are calling having the correct app installed and open. That's pretty much how it works now in Europe, but again, you have to be sure the person you're calling has a compatible phone. In terms of Skype I know Symbian has a "startup" flag that apps can use (I used to use Fring and Tru-Phone and they could start up with the phone and sit in the background) and I know Android does too, Nimbuzz starts up with my phone so I have all my IM accounts available when my phone is on 3G.<br><br>I envision the best way for Apple to do it is to have a separate network like the Blackberry does. But it's a pain when a friend says "do you have a BB pin?" and I don't. It'll be an exclusive club. It could mean the fracturing I get with my IM accounts...some friends on GTalk, a couple on MSN, one or two on Yahoo...none on AIM. I think I've probably spent a cumulative hour on the webcam in all that time... and most of it was to show off my room.<br><br>People just aren't terribly interested in videocalling. The light levels are never quite right, you feel self conscious and we have a lifetime of familiarity with straighforward voice calls.<br><br>When I had a video capable phone on 3UK for 2 years with 50 free video minutes per month, I used it /once/, as proof-of-concept, and never again. I barely knew anyone else with a compatible phone, and found it stilted if they did.<br><br>Free skype voice calls are fun though, if the carrier allows it. The thing Apple does is make doing simple things as simple as they should be.<br><br>As an example go to <a href="http://www.flickr.com/cameras/" rel="nofollow">http://www.flickr.com/cameras/</a> and see how far ahead of even the second most popular camera phone the iPhone is...the second most popular is actually another iPhone! My Core2Duo laptop? Sure... But unlike my 2.6kg laptop, this one fits in my pocket, yet it's capable of doing most of the things I used my laptop for. I've already used the N900 before. It's noticeably slower than an HTC Incredible running Android 2.1. The Incredible and EVO use the same Snapdragon SOC. Android 2.2 is going to offer a rather large speed boost as well.<br><br>While I applaud the N900 for being innovative and versatile, it's just too slow.
