Dell Streak's Gorilla Glass screen: torture tested for your amusement (video)
So we've been hearing rumors about the Dell Streak being some kind of a rugged bad boy. Word is, the Gorilla Glass display on this 5-inch slate is good enough to withstand pretty much anything a human would care to throw its way. Them's fighting words where we come from, so we did the only thing a responsible tech blog can do -- we put them to the test. Should you be brave enough to follow us after the break, you'll come upon our best efforts to destroy our own Streak prototype, albeit with little success. Then again, the end result might be less important than the journey there, which is not to be missed.

This phone is so pimp... if only it was getting FroYo with the mobile hotspot... I would be sooooo happy.
Damnit, Engadget. Now we have to make a "Ways smartphones can still be improved" list, again. I thought we would be finished with those after the EVO 4G. :)
Is Engadget doing this on behalf of Steve Jobs?
Does it make (UMA) wi/fi phone calls? Does it work 'with' the SD card? Does it have a big battery? If it doesn't I'm positive I can break the glass screen.
256 RAM then it is a waste of time.
Engadget, you should really consider buying Gorilla Wood desks.
The Zune HD has gorilla glass, no?
I swear it does, it's pretty much indestructible.
I hope someone develops a new pair of pants with a pocket right in front of the crotch so you can place this thing in for protection of sensitive areas.
I had a Sharp feature phone that I dropped countless times, on ceramic floors & concrete. Each time I cringed, because I was sure it was finished, but each time I picked it up, it still worked fine with no damage.
It's hard to believe the new generation of smartphones could endure that kind of punishment, but the stabbing test on the Dell Streak looks quite promising.
Desire and One are like "...shit."
I want a tough screen like that on my next android phone...
But who stabs their phone on accident? Few people. How about dropping it like one might to an accident. Or some other more "real world" test. The BBC guy broke one didn't he?
@Bacchus027 I wouldn't say people bang their phone onto the corner of an aquarium by accident. And no, I'm not going to do that with my Streak, either. :p
nice, i hope palm is taking notes...
The whole time i kept saying "nooo! stop it. stooop, STOP THAT! AHHHH!"
I cringed when I saw him stab it. Dell or not, that IS painful to watch.
Instead of hammering the device with a pen tip, you should be hammering Dell for putting out the device with Android 1.6. Promises of 2.2 later in the year sound like Samsung. I'll consider getting the Streak when and if it's properly upgraded.
@markbyrn I don't think Dell could've done much on their end -- either push the Streak out now with 1.6, or delay it until 2.2's ready (which might take another month or two). I'd assume they'd want the phone out before the next iPhone's announced.
The droid has the same screen
is it as durable
Engadget how about you test the droid It is also gorilla glass
I may get bombed for this haha.
But what exactly is the Dell Streak?
A phone? Tablet? MiniPhoneTablet?
do THAT to your iphone ...
Holy fuck.
This thing could almost make me switch to ATT from Verizon! love it
damn... that wasn't my gadget and I felt a whole shitload of anxiety just watching them do that.
You just shouldn't do that even if you can!
I think I'll actually spend more time tapping it that way than using it as a normal touchscreen :]
that video just gave me a heart attack!
Get a bag, toss in a few keychains, some change, a lighter and the phone. Tie it up bindle style to a stick, and bounce for 2 hours.
Then show me no scratches.
Dear Engadget,
Please use Vimeo when you upload your videos, that is the only embedded video that works where I work.
Love always,
Me
The Motorola Backflip's screen also uses Gorilla glass. I searched around and surprisingly it's not heavily advertised but I found quite a few people saying that it is, one of which was the Forum manager at Motorola Support Forums.
Check out the Nexus One getting a similar test, but much more rigid, and really testing it's limits with Keys, and Scissors.

OK, so why did my Zune HD gorilla glass screen scratch while it was in my pocket?
This is completely true. This: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syPOPmkyfZs Uses gorilla glass, just watch this video.
@opc100
I wanted to believe it as well... but now...

Yeah great screen BUT - my LCD display is broken under the glass, to my knowledge I did nothing unusual for this to happen. Having Google'd this issue I found that there are others that this has happened to. One person suggested that there may be a design fault or maybe a quality control issue with this handset as not all Streak screens are flush with their casings. I personally have felt three Streak screens, mine, a friends and the display model in an o2 shop by running my fingers across lengthways and found they were all different!? One was a even a couple of millimetres higher on one side! How is this possible and could this be a root cause for my problem?
