I noticed I really like the weight of a keyboard base holding the monitor in position on my lap. Plus rubber pads keep it from sliding down my pant legs. But on the bus or skytrain the keyboard gets in the way so I have to partially close it just to fit it between myself and the seat in front. Part of the problem is that it's a 14" laptop which is small but not small enough for cramped areas.
I hope we get more tablets with this direction of design thought - stowaway compartments for keyboard and a built-in stand. No, really, it's a Gateway E-295C/C-14*XL (the * being a 0, 1, 2, or 3). Only paid US$550 shipped for it, and it's no slouch with the Core 2 Duo T9300 this one had installed. Countless other convertible Tablet PCs exist, of course.

Why would I want the tablet functionality? I'm a student. I get a lot of notes thrown at me. I also hate paper. Solution? OneNote + Wacom pen-capable Tablet PC! I just write or draw it in, and it saves it right then and there, also making it searchable. It's also a great platform for artwork.

As for bad price-to-performance ratios, that has traditionally been a problem, but eBay sure helps a lot there. If you really need processing power, the ideal solution is obviously a custom-built desktop unless portability is such a need that you're willing to spend twice as much on half the performance for something that's still rather heavy and bulky to carry around.

Back to the subject-this is certainly an interesting take on the "slate with detachable keyboard" approach (Compaq Concerto, Compaq TC1000/HP TC1100, most Motion Computing slates). It actually reminds me of a certain Fujitsu Stylistic keyboard approach, only that keyboard interfaced through IrDA, not Bluetooth, thus line-of-sight would be required.

The keyboard size worries me, however-the image makes it look rather cramped with small keys, like a lot of netbooks.
