ROFL.

The only reason I care about the iPad is because Apple is trying to steer the whole internet towards HTML5 when it isn't even finalized yet.

Congratulations. This proves that the average buyer doesn't know squat about computers. This proves that marketing and name brand recognition is everything. I've seen it from most everyone: the second you start to talk in detail about technology, their eyes gloss over. This is not a good sign, it's bad, like the coming of Idiocracy.

This is the exact same reason that American Idol is the number one television show, that McDonalds sells the most hamburgers. It's all about marketing.

So congrats, Apple. I know the target audience for the iPad. Older people who don't own a primary laptop or desktop and those who would rather not use their brains for 15 seconds/ would rather play mindless time-wasting games than do anything productive.

EVERY SINGLE TIME someone brings up a competitor, there is an Apple fanboy like LondonExchange that comes in to say something to the effect of "This is a guaranteed fail, why would anyone challenge the iPad?" Congrats. Just keep on thinking you're special and acting smug because you went with what is popular.

One more thing: on almost any other article involving a competitor to the iPad, some FANBOY (That's right, LondonExchange. you're not an "Apple supporter" you're a friggin fanboy. You call everyone else "Apple haters", so you're going to be an Apple fanboy) comes in to talk about how the iPad has already won the popular vote. When someone brings up a competitor that has better hardware and just as good of a user experience (like the tablets that have been released the past few days), eventually the whole argument boils down to "Screw the specs, the iPad's sold more".

Mike10010100

Comments on

@Mike10010100
Just as good? Why the hell would you only want an on-screen keyboard and touch control? I would much rather prefer something that converts and gives the user the option for more fine control with a keyboard and mouse, unless you somehow think that someone on an on-screen keyboard can beat someone on a physical keyboard.

Secondly, what is the matter with Windows 7? It's built around multitouch and touchscreen devices. Looking at the ExoPC, I don't see any lag. Seriously. It's just as fluid as the iPad, and has the option of going into Windows 7 for some real computing.

Have fun with your iPad. You are definitely in the group of old people/or inexperience computer users.

This is the problem with the general public. For some reason form is always more important that function. My philosophy is that form, function, and value should go hand in hand, and nothing should be missing from that trio. The value and function of the iPad simply doesn't add up to the form factor. You would have some too if wherever you go you're surrounded by people who rub in your face that a product is doing amazingly, and that somehow makes you less of a person. Don't believe me? Read LondonExchange's comment about 50 times. That's what we who don't prefer the iPad encounter on a daily basis.

And what angers me more is that even while I recognize that the iPad has a large target audience and is great for a giant iPod Touch, the Apple fanboys still continue to harass competitors and claim that people should just stop trying to compete with Apple. Aren't you cute. Call me a troll to circumvent reading my arguments. Good one.

@redhineymonkey

"Again, deriding someone for buying a product just makes you look like a pompous ass."

I'm not deriding you. I'm saying if you buy the iPad, it's meant for you, you're part of the target market, aka: people who don't want anything more than a media consumption device, old people, or those who don't know any better.

"So, you want a laptop that isn't a laptop and hate slates, but realize that there are places for both of the form factors to be used?"
Yep. I want a laptop that is both a regular laptop AND a slate. Seriously, do you not get it? I want OPTIONS AND FREEDOM. People may use either, but they're limiting themselves. Which is perfectly fine if that's what they want to spend their money on.

"Again, figure out what you want before you open your mouth and spout crap."
Not crap. I truly don't care whether or not you buy an Apple product. I do care that Apple is having success using a process that takes away freedom from the developer, consumer, and everyone in between. Because other companies will try to repeat that success. I like my development and platforms relatively open. Closed platforms may offer a better user experience, but you give up far too much freedom IMO.

"Except, you can do pretty much what you need to from a mobile aspect. Word processing, spreadsheets, presentations. Are you going to render CGI on it? Hell no, but I doubt you are going to do that on a netbook or hybrid device either."
But you CAN. You're not limited. You can do what you want when you want it with the device that you spent your hard-earned money on.

"It didn't go over my head. Your only point was that you can't understand why people like something that you don't. I got that loud and clear. Too bad for you that this isn't the world according to Mike."
Very true. Have fun in 1984. Big Brother Apple will love you.

"And awkward? Last time I checked, my bluetooth keyboard matched perfectly with the iPad. No muss, no fuss."
So you like having to crick your neck at an odd angle to see the screen properly? Unless you buy an extra accessory in order to stand the iPad up.

"Too awkward for you to type in the connect code. Maybe you want a PS/2 connection on there, so you can color code your connections?"
Aww. Cute. Try to make my argument seem illegitimate and make up a few strawmans while you're at it! Clever, Apple fanboy.

"The problem with a full OS is that there ends up being a ton of services that aren't needed for this form factor. Microsoft is not going to stop services for you just because you are on a tablet."
If you don't like those services, stop them. It's all perfectly configurable in Windows 7.

"And slapping another UI on top of an existing OS is just a cheap way out of saying that the underlying OS doesn't really belong there. If it was such a good idea, why not let it be?"
FREEDOM FREEDOM FREEDOM. Do you not get it? "Hey I want to use this nice skin to consume media. Now, I'll switch out of it and do the stuff I'm used to on a normal computer"

Seriously. I can't use GoToMyPC on any mobile device so far. I have to whip out my computer. Know why? Cuz it works on windows. I would love to have a small device that ran windows so I wouldn't have to be limited on what I can do. I recognize that this isn't for everyone. But saying that Apple is the end-all and that everyone else should just stop trying, and that there is zero market for a slate with Windows makes my blood boil.

Mike10010100

Comments on

@Mike10010100
You've got way too much time on your hands, son.
