This is a new phenomenon here.

Workers at Foxconn are under much greater pressure than at other vendors.Couple that with wage inflation, they are likely to be able to earn the same money in their home towns as their incumbent employer. China has an elevated level of stress in it's normal 'man on the street' citizens from what a psychiatrist said on NPR a few weeks ago. It was in response to an inquiry to the cause of all the guys freaking out and attacking school kids with butcher knives not workers jumping off buildings, but she did say there were many factors that contribute to elevated depression, anxiety and stress. So is it just because Apple is associated with Foxconn that these tragedies have been all over the media? IMO, they would be having these issues whether the OEM were Apple or Sony or Hp or....?

I do believe Apple has a responsibility and an ability to make some change, but I don't feel they are at fault and that there is a limit on what is possible in this area when dealing with China.

hecklerz

Comments on Steve Jobs on Foxconn: 'We're all over this'

In the end, we all know it comes down to money. Apple (and all the others) could move their operations elsewhere, but the one thing that I'm fairly certain Foxconn has over the many other factories that must have been considered (prior to entering this partnership agreement) are (1) quality manufacturing, (2) low price, and (3) ability to meet high demand.

Even if Foxconn improves the conditions by adding a, what, a "stress relief room" for employees to take out their anger in, that doesn't change the fact that it is Foxconn that literally works its employees to death while raking in millions for the top management. A nice swimming pool? Are you kidding me? After working to exhaustion every day all these workers want to do is sleep as much as possible before the alarm goes off at 3 or 4am the next day. I'm sure being late for a shift is not an option if they want to keep their job, so the perks and amenities that Foxconn "graciously" provides are just for PR purposes. Foxconn needs to stop trying to spin this and allow its employees to have a life. Say, shorter shifts but with better pay so that employees don't have to keep working and stressing to unhealthy levels every day...

Yeah, yeah, so what if it costs Foxconn some few million dollars here and there. I don't know how much it brings in annually, but if it is, say, 300 million, does it really make that much difference if the price to improve the worker's quality of worklife "lowers" the profits to, say, 200 million? You're still making 200 million in profits a year already!!

Trexx
