Hdmi is universally used with HDTVs and the 1.4 will bring the specification for dual 1080p for 3D. Not to mention the long running stance that hdmi has had dolby digital audio. Display port only got it this april whereas the vast majority dont have audio. Apple just doesnt want to pay the premium for an hdmi.
