The Apple A4 and the Samsung S5PC110A01 are both SoCs (System-on-Chips).

The CPU core in both is designed by ARM (which Apple part own) and was optimised for clock speed on 45nm by Intrinsity (which Apple now own, but didn't at the time).

However, the CPU is not even the major part of the design. According to ARM, the Cortex A8, including L1 cache, is less than 4mm^2 on 65nm. On 45nm, it should be around 2.5mm^2.

According to iFixit and Chipworks, they measured the A4's die size to be 55mm^2. That means that the CPU core is less than 5% of the A4's silicon.

All UBM have actually demonstrated is that they both have a Cortex A8, which is not actually any kind of an insight. You can safely assume that Samsung will have licensed the optimisations from Intrinsity too, but that still leaves 95% of the chip as unaccounted for.

That difference includes the memory controller, pre-fetchers, L2 cache, display controllers, 3D GPU, video encoder, video decoder, 2D vector accelerator, DSP, security engine, bus, I/O blocks, audio processor and god knows what else. This is not insignificant stuff - it is 95% of the design and makes a huge difference to the performance and power.

And it was designed by the former PA semi guys at Apple, not by Samsung. Samsung just fabricate it.

Fnuky

Comments on Apple iPad and Samsung Wave share a brain

the press release button isn't working :/

wiggyfuzz

Comments on Apple iPad and Samsung Wave share a brain

@Wiggy Fuzz Fixed it, thanks.

TimStevens

Comments on Apple iPad and Samsung Wave share a brain

LIAR

Pork

Comments on Apple iPad and Samsung Wave share a brain

@Pork How is he lying? He said, "The iPhone 4 is powered by the A4 chip — Apple's A4 chip. This is a chip that was designed by our own team. They are really good and this is wonderful to have in an iPhone."

A few logical comments. I'm certain this chip is nearly identical in every way to the Samsung fabricated/Intrinsity designed SoC. Also recall that Apple bought PA Semi as well.

I'm willing to wager that the A4 might be the same silicon but it's probably not exactly the same just with new lettering on top. Apple spends a lot of money with Samsung for displays, memory, and chips so the partnership as long been established.

My guess is that after Apple bought Intrinsity and PA Semi, they all went to work optimizing this SoC further specifically for the iOS and better power management. Whatever gains or competitive advantage they made in this area is what Jobs is referring to in addition to the fact that the team Apple bought designed it originally prior to the purchase.

Besides, as everyone knows, it was probably far cheaper to just buy Intrinsity and PA Semi combined than to license their technology developed for broader application. It's why the closed hardware/software ecosystem works for Apple as a counterpoint to PC/Windows.

Was it designed by Apple?
