We test patches every month prior to deployment. On a given month MS releases 4 to 8 patches (sometimes less, sometimes more, but most in that range). MS knows this and all they do is roll out a bunch of previously released patches and calls it SP1. By that thinking they could roll out 10 patches a week after launch of a new OS and call it SP1 and people would be happy. IT folks, which includes me, need to start evaluating OS's before SP1. If they had they would know that Windows 7 doesn't need a SP at all to be as solid as XP if not more so.

John Doe..

Comments on Windows 7 Service Pack 1 public beta due next month

I like Windows 7 a lot and that is saying something since I bagged on the performance and problems with Vista. I had a lot of clients who bought computers with Vista that begged me to upgrade them to XP.

Things that would be nice

1 - I'd hope they add more control over the start menu. It would be great to click on Start and be able to go to all programs without having to click on all programs.

2 - on some systems it doesn't sleep properly - although this may be a bios issue requiring firmware that doesn't exist yet. Still it seems much more reliable than sleeping on XP or nasty ol' Vista. I would say only about 1% of the systems I support have that issue and those are brand new systems so hopefully this is in the works by MS or the manufacturers.

3 BRING BACK right click for network properties - too many clicks away unless you make shortcuts.

4 Make a default desktop icon for a gui IPCONFIG - it would make supporting my end users much easier - go the extra step and have it give both NAT and Public IP address of the computer!

5 Give a choice for the show desktop icon. You can create an icon for the left hand side but why not give it as an option for those who have clicked on the left hand side for a decade or so?

6. Set the default folder view so that it shows the menu, full path, extensions and so many things you'll need for supporting remote users.

7. Don't bother showing IE64 at the root of the programs menu, same with XPS and other junk most end users will never need.

8. Make a default icon for comuter, network properties and IE on the desktop - yes you can add them however it would be nice if I didn't have to do so much customizing for my clients and so many calls from them on how to do it on their home computers since they use those icons so often.

9. Give an option for customizing UAC on specfic shortcuts or apps so you can leave the level with some protection but not get prompted for some apps which will always need more access than others such as VNC.

10 - Last but not least, FIX THE CRASHES IN INTERNET EXPLORER - sure it could be flash or java causing the crashes - I really don't care - hire someone to do nothing but fix the bugs in their programs with how it interacts with yours. (Sure some troll is going to say IE doesn't crash for them - they brows MSN all day and it doesn't crash but if you go to hundreds of different sites each day you'll find it does crash as I support a few 1000 users and their home and work computers all have problems with IE on Win 7)

boe

Comments on Windows 7 Service Pack 1 public beta due next month

@boe dude, you need to get laid hahaha

joking

you actually make some really interesting points for "remote support" technicians as everyone now knows you work as

Daniel T

Comments on Windows 7 Service Pack 1 public beta due next month

@boe

Crashes in IE?
