GPU acceleration for Flash (videos) wasn't possible on Mac platforms until mid-April because Apple wasn't offering any public APIs granting access to needed system resources. And since no modern platform grant direct access to hardware, GPU acceleration on Macs (for videos) was a no-go. That's until Apple released the "Video Decode Acceleration Framework", which provides C interfaces to enable H.264 acceleration for certain compatible graphics cards.

http://www.macrumors.com/2010/04/22/apple-opens-door-to-hardware-accelerated-decoding-of-h-264-in-flash-and-other-platforms/
http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/technotes/tn2010/tn2267.html

Also, take note that compatibility regarding graphic cards supported and capabilities (codecs) will be limited by the framework itself, unless Apple enables devs to access GPU resources any other way (apart from OpenGL which is pretty much useless for video codecs).

Jonathan R.-B.

Comments on Adobe releases patch for 'critical' Flash vulnerability

@Programmer Apple's released the API.
