jeez people. natal is NOT a better name than kinect. the only reason you think so is because you've become familiarized with it, as I have, over the past however long blah. you have trouble letting go of something you're familiar with it and have trouble embracing this craaazy new horrrrrrible name.

if you were introduced to this in a test group (and you had never heard of it before) as a new Microsoft device for gaming and asked which name, Kinect or Natal, better describes it, is less controversial and elicits more positive feelings, you would get people sitting back, tilting their heads saying...

"well, kinect makes me think of connect 4 and you know like connecting with people and stuff. you know like how a family connects with people over gaming, like, how my kids and I play rock band and stuff. Doesn't seem to be anything controversial about it, I guess. I'd say it makes me happy thinking about spending time with my kids. I'd give this new gaming device a shot."

There is a reason they decided to name it Project Natal to start with. My guess is that the word natal made them see the project as a new device, a new venture and technology that is still in it's infancy. The name given to it during research probably prompted "intelligent" people like scientists/programmers to imagine the device as something they can create in their own image, or "give birth" to in a completely re-imagined way and to not be beholden to some preconceived notion of the what the device is or should do.

Well, that's maybe how MS pronounce it.

You cannot tell for sure if you never heard MS say it. It's not simply "the way it looks".

If it's a play on the word "kinetic", then it would be pronounced ken-nect. If it's a play on the word "kin", then it would be kin-nect.

Anyway, I think it's a bad choice of name because it will be confusing to people. I dunno, they don't seem to have a problem asking for a Wii or iPad. If I was a person to get embarassed over asking for a weird sounding product, those two names would embarass me much more than Kinect.

And now that the Wii comes in black, can you see soccer mom's this Christmas, "Can I get a black Wii".

Anyways, if people are really going to nitpick over the pronounciation of either Ken-ect or Kin-ect, then they really have problems in life.
