You're thinking in terms of discrete layers, which is natural to think about but wrong in the context of Foveon. The camera samples all three layers at each site and does some heavy lifting algorithmically to determine the input color based on the response of all three layers at the same time. They don't work like bandpass filters on the pixel sites of a Bayer sensor, these channels have long, overlapping response curves that extend into each others' frequency ranges. You can't just sample the bottom layer and consider that the "red channel," it just doesn't work that way on the Foveon.

Porter

Comments on Sigma SD15 nabs a lofty price and near-term release date, at long last

@JPorter900 That's exactly the problem - Foveon is worse than a dye-based filter. A conventional filter likely lets much more red light pass through than the top two layers of Foveon. The signal at the bottom layer is so weak that nothing good can come out of the color conversion. Look at something red in an ISO800 picture and this should be evident.

grantyale

Comments on Sigma SD15 nabs a lofty price and near-term release date, at long last

Well, if it's got the dynamic range it promises I'm sure there are those who will put up with the flaws that the camera might entail...

Ypoknons

Comments on Sigma SD15 nabs a lofty price and near-term release date, at long last

Their lenses are awful, why would someone buy one of their cameras?

Gary Conrad

Comments on Sigma SD15 nabs a lofty price and near-term release date, at long last

@grilla Their high-end line is quite good.

EB

Comments on Sigma SD15 nabs a lofty price and near-term release date, at long last

@grilla
to try to make the lenses better!

Mike Hunt

Comments on Sigma SD15 nabs a lofty price and near-term release date, at long last

@Shalabi took some photos using a friend's Sigma 50/1.4 on a Canon 40D and it's at least much better than my Canon 50/1.4

grantyale

Comments on Sigma SD15 nabs a lofty price and near-term release date, at long last

@grilla
They have very good lenses. I can understand why someone would buy their DPx point and shoots but I can't understand why someone would choose this over a canon or nikon SLR in the same range. I understand the Foveon sensor has it's attraction but it's still the same sensor in their DPx series, and that hasn't changed in years. If it were actually a true and improved 14mp Foveon sensor, then I could totally understand and probably want it for myself, but it's not. I don't see any real benefit over the latest nikon or canon sensors. I use a canon slr myself so maybe someone can clue me in on some other reasons why someone would get this?

I also wouldn't say their lenses are awful though but they're good hobbyist lenses at a good price. one of my first slr lenses was the sigma 24-70 2.8 lens. it's no L or G lens but It's quite nice too.

you guys can't really argue the quality of lenses by their 50mm primes. 50mm primes are the easiest to make.
