So, if Apple have never talked about this feature, how is it possible for them to have "spun" anything? Having your mobile connected to your facebook/twitter account. That way cellphone makers can integrate facebook/twitter messaging straight into the contacts application.

Of course this doesn't need cell operators. It could work with a simple contacts import and merge with a social media site like facebook, Giving you the option to send messages all from your contacts app to a variety of social media networks.

If I understand you correctly, Android already has these features. All of my contacts have their twitter, facebook and Flickr accounts directly linked (and directly accessible) in my adress book. Their more recent facebook post shows directly in the address book under their name, and the address book app uses their Facebook photo as their profile pic if you don't specify a different one.
