They use their pattern of release dates to be annual iterations or sequels. If you liked the iPhone experience, wouldn't you like that experience on a better/faster/whatever version of that same phone? They only need to market one device, buy parts for one device, etc etc. It's more or less the same thing they've been doing with computers but easier to swallow.

When I read about how Droid X makes "Droid Incredible look like a benchwarmer," I imagined the people who just bought the Incredible would feel a little bummed out seeing as how they're going to likely be using that phone for the next two years. Unless you're buying phones unlocked, you're a slave to contracts which leave no room to consistently upgrade. So when a newer Android based phone comes out in one/three/six/twelve months, there's really no chance of you picking it up without contract breaking hassle. This is sort of analogous to non-Apple computer releases, if you will, as better components constantly come out; but harder to swallow as you can't upgrade phone components.

Apple/AT&T don't sidestep this entirely since can't upgrade annually. They try to lessen the blow by allowing upgrades at the 18 month mark but this is really just a tease if you've been buying them near the release date each year. Still, at least you don't feel immediately boned when you hear HTC has managed to cram another 2MP or 200MHz a month after you just picked up your latest badass phone. Add hardware fragmentation to platform fragmentation. Android's freedom is fantastic but it leaves a lot of room for instantaneous buyer's remorse since the buyer doesn't have a lot of freedom.

As contracts in the US stand now, I appreciate Apple's benchmark releases as I don't have any real freedom in upgrading anyway. This is a United States centric set of opinions as I've read that other countries have a lot more choice as far as buying unlocked phones and the like.

ash chapman

Comments on

@ash chapman i was never debating what makes the iphone a success. So for MS OS, this works real well for that. You can make a Frankenstein computer and put any variation of MS OS on it. Don't think your going to have the same issue with smartphones. So while Apple keeps it's OS tight on it's own hardware, you get to see all these variations of Googles OS showing up, with one outdoing the other. But you ain't gonna see too many geeks constructing their new smartphone. With Apple's track records of customer support and quality control, ease of use, continuous tech advances + kick ass aesthetics, there are a lot of people that want the iPhone. Here is where I disagree and was making my point:

"1.majority of iphone users just upgrade their device year after year.So if you sold 10million one generation and upgrade yearly you can safely assume youll sell 10mill next gen with Apples incremental upgrades."

I don't believe this to be the case. When the iPhone came out most everyone said it would fail because it didn't have a physical keyboard... now you'd be hard pressed to find a smartphone with one. Kids adapt pretty fast to almost anything.

I also feel my OSX/Windows comparison is valid. OSX only works on Mac...what 4-7% of all computers. Windows still holds the market share because their OS can be put on any PC (even a Mac). My point is Google is playing a similar game, only this time the hardware can't be manufactured and Google has already put out about a dozen different OS's that work on different hardware, one outdoing the other. So you buy a Droid and next week the Hero comes out, you buy a Hero and the Incredible is released, you buy the incredible and Evo comes out, then Froyo, no Droid X, and on and on. I'm not so sure this strategy is going to keep the masses happy, especially the ones that want to "keep up with the Joneses".

Apple keeps it simple, elegant, easy to use and is constantly raising the bar for mobile device functionality. Okay so OS 4 won't support my daughter's phone. But that's due to hardware upgrades that can't be helped. Froyo doesn't seem like it will work on the original Droid. Looking at an Incredible against my iPhone 3gs, made me love the iPone OS even more. Okay the Incredible was faster with downloads, but everything else about it, mostly the plastic hardware and the fact I couldn't see a movie playing in sunlight was pathetic. Not blaming Google for their OS, but they should be more selective on who's putting it on what hardware or they'll end up the Acer of smartphones, while I'll hand down my 3gs to my brother and my 3g I gave to my lawyer. So your math doesn't make sense. I just made 3 new iPhone customers by purchasing the latest Apple hardware. Does this make sense?

Common Man

Comments on

@commonman I agree with some of your points.
You cant really compare the cell industry to the PC industry. Theres a different mindset when you purchase a cell and a computer. People don’t have the same connection to their PCs as they do their Cells. Some people can go a couple days without even touching their computer but your cell is near you 24/7. The PC industry hardware wise is totally diff then the cell industry. If you walk into Bestbuy read the specs on each computer. They are all basically the same. Only diff is the case. Most consumers couldn’t even tell you what kind of memory their computers needs. And most wont even notice the diff once you remove all the crap manufacturers install. And there are basically only 2 diff OS choices. Tho really only one for mainstream usage WINDOWS. But every person knows the details of their cell. And they come in so many diff types of configs and do so many dif thigns.

The cell industry is totally diff. You have APPLE, Nokia, Google and so many diff versions of Android and Symbian floating around. And one version of iphone OS each year. It just cant be compared. Apple hasn’t raised the bar with iphone for a while. The last year and half they have been playing catchup spec wise. What they excel at is how the present their features and how they put it together in a simple to use package even grandma can recite Steves presentations like she understands it. Froyo will be compatible with the Droid. And Google has set new rules to limit or end fragmentation. Its just up to Motorola and VZ to release the updates in a timely manner. The problem is its in VZ and motorolas best interest to just release something newer then support their current devices. Since their competitors are releasing new devices on a monthly basis. New devices attract new subscribers. Google-->motorola--->VZ--> Customer... Or Apple+ AT&T--->Customer. Which system do you think has the advantage? Apple controls their own world since they supply the hardware and the OS updates each year. Who else in the cell industry has this same model?

Your example of handing down your older Iphones doesn’t compare to my point. You actually took new sales away from apple and AT&T. I assume there already AT&T customers. The 3G and the 3Gs are still supported by Apple right now. Can you name another device that came out when the 3G did that’s still supported like it? My point was each year Apple releases a new device you can safely assume most users in the itunes ecosystem will upgrade. I don’t understand why people still get shocked each year when apple sells a lot of iphones. I assume at least 70% of current iphone users will upgrade once the new one is released each year.

I didn’t mean to come across as snooty when I said I didn’t understand your point. Its these types of debates that make me love reading Engadget.

Neeko

Comments on

@neeko18 Understood, but yes my daughter was an AT&T phone user but never had the Data plan nor the texting option. My Lawyer was Verizon and got a 3g and is now a new AT&T customer, my brother is on Sprint and will switch to AT&T once I hand him my 3gs. So in a way that is 2.5 new customers for AT&T. Seems the only real thing the iPhone is really poor at is making phone calls. Is that Apple's design or AT&T bandwidth bottleneck from so many iPhone using data more than calls? IDK. I do know that with 720P HD video and the capabilities seem to me an extreme example of Apple 2-3 years ahead of the smartphone competition. Edit HD movies on your cell phone? I'm pretty biased being in the Television industry so these things don't relate to the normal user. But I have yet to see ANY phone present video as sharp, crisp and clear as the iPhone no matter how many millimeters larger the screen is. Plus I'm living in the MobileMe cloud so I get to sync all my Apple devices and send up to 2gig files without a ftp app.

Many of my Non Apple family members don't even know what their new phones are capable of. Wish Sprint worked like that. Its funny how the most popular phone the last couple years cant do the 1 thing its ment to do..MAKE CALLS. And its on one of the smaller networks for 3G. Yes AT&T is fastest 3G network theoretically but what good is it when nobody has the capability? I don’t really hear non iphone customers talking about dropped calls. HTC Evo,palm Pre HTC Droid and prob a bunch of Nokia handsets all had 720p capability on or at same time as Iphone. Apple hasn’t lead in capabilities in a while, they’ve just been catching up and putting a nice red ribbon on things other phones have had for months or years, multitasking, MMS,3G,video front facing camera. What they do better then everyone else is market and package these things. iphone4 video capability is still not reviewed. What it looks like on the cell screen isn't what's important. When its uploaded somewhere and it looks decent is what is key. And im sorry but I cant imagine most people really editing videos on a small cell phone screen more then a couple times. That’s more of a novelty feature. MobileMe is also a niche feature that to some is im sure a life saver and others nothing special. Its not a across the board game changer. But for the same fee I sure noniphone users can get the features.

I would perceive myself a very tech savvy person and I use my phone to its fullest and the only time I needed to send a vcard was to import my palm pre contacts to Gmail so I would have them on my Evo. And as much as this is an electronic ago some things still havent been replaced with gadgets like business cards.Handing someone a Bcard is not the same as using bluetooth or emailing them it. Most people still like that interaction, its more trusted.

A rock solid device by Google would def have to be the Nexus1. It may not have been the high volume sold device but its by far the best all around Android device. But that’s what you get when Google controls the OS and the hardware. N1 was just a reference device for everyone to see the power of Android it was never built or marketed to sell millions. Tho Nokia and Motorola have made plenty of rock solid devices, mostly Nokia but Americans wouldn’t see any of those phones by Nokia. Nokia makes more high-end phones then any other manufacturer including Apple. Its their OS that is sometimes not on the same level.

I believe we both have great points. If Apple didn’t limit the iphone so much and it wasn’t on AT&T I would totally jump all over it. But with my cheaper Sprint bill and to me good service with zero dropped calls I just cant justify using the iphone. I love watching my movies on a big screen with a device that still fits in my pocket. When I use my ipod touch now the screen feels so tiny. Im not an Apps guy so I don’t feel im missing out on the 200K+ app market. Android market has served me well.Plus I like customizing all my devices..Were geeks that’s what we do..

Neeko

Comments on

As someone who has been trying to preorder all day, this annoys me.
