If Apple sells only 7 million iPads this year, it will be the most any company ever sold in tablets in one year and maybe even two. Is that enough a "ball rolling" for you? ...yes. Apple took a real PC and castrated it with hardware that's about 10 years behind the times and then closed down the device so it's not so easy for the consumer n00bs to notice this fact. Then they slashed the price on the whole thing.
