People have had ones in the open fail and I'm sure some in cabinets are still working fine too. It's luck of the draw but nothing changes the fact that the initial design was highly flawed. I've also had an Xbox from launch and had it on a desk in the open air but it still RROD, out of the 9 people I know with Xbox's (including some Xbox Elite's) ALL have RROD! ... that also includes my neighbour when I was bitching to him about mine just doing it and him telling me his did last week! lol ...

Actually tho I should probably also say all where covered by the extended warrenty but that's still a pretty crazy bad problem ... lets hope they've fixed it with this design, they must have ...
