The reason Apple's Facetime is Wifi only is simple. It's same reason you can jailbreak your iPhone and use an App to do real full Multi-tasking without Apple's spanking your hand. It's simple really..... 3G networks do not support Garden Walled Multi-tasking or any interactive web content on the server side. That's why when you play videos on YouTube, it suspends Safari and opens a device side player along with pre-caching of the file. Two interactive video is NOT supported over a garden wall on 3G. So the first thing I'd do...... if I was fool enough to buy a iPhone 4 before buying the Moto 2ghz phones or HTC with 1.2 dual core Arm chips with monster screen contrast ratios & full 1280x800 screens..... is JAIL BREAK that sucker!!! :D

Jack Teh Ripper

Comments on 3G video call on Fring for Android: bringing HTC EVO 4G and Dell Streak together (hands-on)

@Shalabi

So then you think Apple is going to port FaceTime to Android?..

Also, X264 is open source, which is why it's supported on everything

EGOvoruhk

Comments on 3G video call on Fring for Android: bringing HTC EVO 4G and Dell Streak together (hands-on)

@Shalabi How is facetime open if it was created by apple and this is an honest question not trying to be snotty or anything

Joel Stephen

Comments on 3G video call on Fring for Android: bringing HTC EVO 4G and Dell Streak together (hands-on)

@justinisyoung it is. Look, Apple is often not the first who brings a new technology to the market (well sometimes they are, but not always), but they are almost always the ones who build a technology in a way that it is actually usable and enjoyable. Take web surfing on a smartphone for example - has been available YEARS before the iPhone was announced, but the iPhone was the first that made web surfing on a smartphone really usable and enjoyable. It was only after the iPhone, that web surfing has actually really been used by a large number of people.

And I'm sure it will be the same with video calling. It has been there for years, but nobody uses it. Why? Because it has low quality, it was expensive, didn't always work as expected, was complex to use and so on. Apple, again, is the first who built video calling in a way that everybody can use it, in a way that it actually really works and is really fun to use. When i just look at this horrible Fring UI for video calling I want to puke, I mean, come on, this looks awful. Have you seen screenshots of FaceTime? THIS is how it should look. And you know why FaceTime is limited to Wi-Fi? Because only with Wi-Fi it is guaranteed that it really works - that there is a good picture with good audio and with less delay. And this is all that Apple is al about - they build something only when it really, REALLY works.

el3ktro

Comments on 3G video call on Fring for Android: bringing HTC EVO 4G and Dell Streak together (hands-on)

@Shalabi You don't know that.
