Nokia 7- or 9-inch MeeGo tablet rumored to be running ARM (not Moorestown) in Q4
While DigiTimes has been known to get a rumor correct now and again, its success rate falls off dramatically when dealing with companies HQ'd outside of its native Taiwan. Keep that in mind when you hear it discuss a Nokia tablet with either a 7- or 9-inch screen. DigiTimes, speaking with "upstream component makers," claims that the Foxconn manufactured device -- of which, about 100 engineering samples have already been produced -- will be ARM-based with a Q4 launch targeted. If true (and that's a big IF) then it would certainly be running the MeeGo OS (that's a Quanta-built prototype above) when it ships. Of course, DigiTimes has been rumoring an ARM-based smartbook from Nokia due in mid 2010 for almost a year. And guess what? It's mid 2010, with smartbooks/netbooks now out of style and tablets all the rage. Thing is, we'd have thought that Nokia would be more likely to opt for Intel's Moorestown in support of their partnership given the Q4 timing. But hey, it's just rumor, let's not get too carried away.

The more the merrier :D
@Fez
MeeThinks this tablet will fail.
Did you see what I did there?
DID YOU SEE?
@uckApple
I think YOUR COMMENT is fail =|
We haven't even seen how MeeGo will perform in this form factor and you are making stupid pun judgments..
@Fez
oh man would a tablet running MeeGo be sick or what
@Fez
Second that, but what can you except from hater
@huzzlehoff
Expect :o)
@huzzlehoff
This could really be tasty. I just hope that a company such as Nokia gives themselves a chance. They should market this thing and create hype as well as Apple do instead of nonchalantly introducing things into a crowded ecosystem. Otherwise this will just be another product with lack of developer support and something not worth the manufacturer paying enough attention to. Companies should really focus on making a few flagship products rather than disorientating the user with too many poorly-thought out devices. Give this a chance to be good please.
@uckApple You have a suck sense of humor.
@Techno1q sick.
@Fez developing two very different OS for slightly different form factor is a good way to kill yourself.
@MySchizoBuddy
Or a good way to diversify..
@MySchizoBuddy
You obviously dont know what you are talking about.
Symbian can do real multitasking on low spec. devices.
MeeGo require high specs.
Symbian is a phone OS.
MeeGo is an Computer OS that runs on mobiles. But that also runs on all other kind of devices.
Thanks to QT, applications can easily be ported between them both.
If nokia would go all for MeeGo, then they would only have a top segment of smartphones. And Nokia sells quite a lot of S60 devices that are not high end.
If nokia would go all for Symbian, then nokia could not produce exiting computers with mobile formfactor, and computers with computer formfactor. They could not make the smartphone evolve!
@uckApple
yh i saw what you did
you showed the whole world your shocking stupidity.
If any scientist who by chance is reading this is looking for any evidence that the human race evolved from apes then look no further than this 'creature' he can even use the nternet. FOOL
@Fez hmmm... I still dont like the idea of a Tablet. I like keyboards so I can actually type on the thing and not get a neck injure while looking down on 90 degrees.
@Ricker I would think that something related to a Tablet from Nokia, even more being produced in China, would have leaked already. I dont buy this one.
Also let me quote you here "But hey, it's just rumor, let's not get too carried away."
Dont say this... You are shaming your colleagues that make rumors roundup with certain tablets from other companies...
Sometimes I really feel you guys love more Apple than Nokia :(
@Fez Meego and Android are FTW. Both are open source and both runs on smart-phones, tablets, television etc.
@symbian
But android is stripped Down, MeeGo is a real computer OS that runs on all kind of devices.
I really hope MeeGo breaks, since its a good concept.
besides Google wants Chrome OS on computers and android on phones. And I really cont like the Idea of chrome OS, where everything is in the browser, with no installation locally... sure it starts up fast, but what do you do, when you cant get coverage with your network?
@Zylam
Hell, yeah. Totally sick. Sick like a Kin.
@MosesusedaniPad
Oh Yeah! Great comparison. A juiced up dumbphone os and the only proper full linux OS that can run on a phone or tablet. Sick!
For f*cks' sake will somebody put a DVB-T TV tuner into these things!!!
@vVv THIS would be the quickest way to get me to buy a tablet, just as long as it has a kickstand.
I still haven't been impressed by anything I've seen on MeeGo. I want to get excited about Nokia again (US here) but they don't seem to want to build a brand or streamlined experience. They seem all over the place.
@JONNNathannn
Maybe that's because Nokia has not presented anything for you to see yet?
Muppet. x_x
@JONNNathannn I don't understand what you want when you say "They seem all over the place". You want Nokia to do just one thing in a "streamlined experience"; what does that mean?
@JONNNathannn
What are you talking about ?
Yeah they are all over the place I mean they sell phones and ... smartphones !
CRAZY !!
It's like selling cars and then more cars with different sizes ! WHO DOES THAT !
I'll sum it up for you since Nokia Strategy seems to evade you :
Nokia sells several hundred millions devices a years among which tons are not smartphones. this low costs devices will disappear and low end smartphone will become more and more mainstream. Nokia has an OS for this : Symbian^3 .
They have a second OS that is for High end smartphones/tablets/ smartbooks : MeeGo that they developed with Intel.
Ultimately you can see Intel getting into the mobility game (or if you don't you're fucking blind) and when they do Nokia will get the goodies.
@Flix C
You are definitely a morron, almost every car maker produce different cars with different sizes, colors, even brands. Look at Toyota - they are selling things in range from Yaris to Lexus luxury cars. I haven't seen a stupider analogy in my life.
@jenjaman http://www.merriam-webster.com/netdict/sarcasm
@JONNNathannn I actually think Meego looks pretty awesome. I too am a little worried about Nokia's commitment to backing this platform though. Still a Meego tablet for me would prob be more usefull then say an android one. I just hope there is a CDMA meego phone soon.
@jenjaman
that was clearly sarcasm, to prove a point. reading the post, its quite clear he thinks nokia does right in doing many different kind of devices
@JONNNathannn
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lncfZda0iEc&feature=player_embedded
if your not impressed by that then I don't know what to tell you.
Damn, this tablet looks good, hope Nokia will do smth even more appealing. Also looking for Meego, this thing is damn nice looking.
@jenjaman yeah, this is the first product i've heard of that's making me wonder if i made a mistake by getting an ipad.
@jenjaman
Nice looking? Seriously?
Check out how overly glossy that screen is. Matte would've been a much more practical, usable, intelligent choice.
And what's up with that ugly chrome trim? I hope it doesn't extend to the unit's back. Shiny, reflective materials are distracting, and have a tendency to accumulate scratches.
Here's hoping a company can bring to market a well engineered device.
@worldspawn
The tablet depicted is not the nokia version... the one on the picture has a read backside, wit some strange grips on it... click the link.
But the OS looks good, however, that device is running Moorestown, so the arm version nokia is workning on if the rumor is true, might be a little less flashy.
@worldspawn
Well I wouldn't trust your sense of design. Do yo like yellow animal figures on curtains and the like? Glossy screen is looks over usability. Chrome is nice too. Personally I'd take matte for usability.
@worldspawn
"Here's hoping a company can bring to market a well engineered device."
Yeah, Nokia only has the equivalent engineering taskforce of a developing country, but what the fuck do they know about proper engineering. *rolls eyes into skull*
well by Q4 nokias 1st MeeGo phone should be coming out. Arm based. So by then, they should have made a nice touchversion of MeeGo, running on ARM.
Doesnt seem impossible, the concept we seen will probably take another few month after that, so perhaps nokia want to push something out for christmas.
If this i true, I would probably wait, cause I think there would be something else around the corner. But a nice new tablet out before christmas would be nice for competition.
ööööm, this < ipad :D
@rescawen
Based on what?
@huzzlehoff It doesn't connect to Itunes, I'm guessing.
@vpuik, actually it does, last time I checked iTunes could be used for synchronizing your music and videos with other USB-storage based players, and you can do that with any Maemo/Moblin/MeeGo device. Mind you, last time I checked the iTunes was 3-4 years ago, I ain't installing that piece of bloatware on my beloved computer again.
gotta say i'm not a fan of the bezel
I'm betting we wont be seeing a decent tablet come out this year
PixelQi please!
Would loooove to see some MeeGo tablets.
I would take cortex-A9 before some moorestown.
I wonder how much this thing will cost. Given Nokia's track record, this will be $599 or something as ridiculous.
This tablet does look good especially with Meego but if they think people are going spend as much for this as for an iPad, they are mistaken. I personally hope they are planning on supporting this device and providing updates for it ala Apple. I guess we'll find out next year.
@menteq
My guess would be 399-600 euros.
Hey people in USA are even getting the Nokia stuff much lower price than in Europe. Still example N900 is cheaper than Droid and Nokia doesn't have any smartphone that's as expensive as Iphone 3GS when it came out. N95 and E90 where something like iphone in 800 euros. N8 is 460 euros in here Germany compared to Nexus one that's 580 euros.
I think people are just confused here as they aren't used to see the actual price of what the phones cost.
@menteq
MeeGo is an open source computer OS, so you will most likely be able to download the latest version. MeeGo will also run on computers of other formfactors, and by other manufactors. So its a different feeling from the whole Apple story.
599 USD is not that expensive for a tablet with nice hardware inside, to an end consumer. For once Apple didnt overcharge that much.
With nokias device you would get a real computer. Probably with webcam, USB-port and so on. Thus I see a market.
@jenjaman http://www.merriam-webster.com/netdict/sarcasm
@JONNNathannn I actually think Meego looks pretty awesome. I too am a little worried about Nokia's commitment to backing this platform though. Still a Meego tablet for me would prob be more usefull then say an android one. I just hope there is a CDMA meego phone soon.
@Edobe
I dont see why nokias comitment to this platform would be a problem?
With MeeGo, nokia can lift smartphones to the next level, to become small computers, running computer software, the same as on desktops.
MeeGo has the potential to be the one truly cross platform OS. Android is not really sutible for computers, its an Mobile OS, with a stripped core, not that much hardware support. Same goes for iOS and as far as we seen, WebOS as well.
Symbian will be the OS for lower speced devices, at least for many years to come.
isnt there anything like ethics in industrial design?
@Formul
if there were, we would have never seen the computer at all... if you think this reminds you of something else... like a TFT screen from philps?
