The computer looks and feels much better than older models. It almost looked like the new Samsung that just came out. The silver color is nice, the touch pad seems to only come on when you click something as some sort of confirmation it clicked. For the price you are getting a VERY tiny laptop, which is why it might feel cheap to you. Some of the NEW HPs are getting the fingerprint reader and will feel cheap also. I think this is more to cut weight then actually make it out of cheap products.

Having played with the gateway, yes the trackpad is cool, although annoying. For the price you get a VERY small laptop but some bestbuys have the new toshiba for $599 in the add which has same specs but bigger size.
