You just say that it sucks because it's hip to say so, or because you have actual reasons to say so? I, for one, have a lot's of reasons to say that Symbian is a good mobile OS. It's the most mature one, it's the most power efficient one. there is a plenty of applications for it, they are available DIRECTLY from their developers, and finally, Symbian is largely open source, licensed on the GPL license. The OS is capable, but sometimes it has been on bad hardware.

Symbian has real multitasking.
It has support for millions of colours in the display, something google for example didnt add that long ago.
Support for video-calling.
Copy/paste.
MMS-support.
and the list goes on, and it has had all for many years.

It just does not look very flashy... on the other hand, that is why it can offer full multitask on low speced hardware. Browsing with flash (be it flash lite, til 10.1 will come out later this year).

The problem with the 5th edition (touch edition), is that when nokia made a touch version, they kept too much of the old thought. And that double click/single click makes it confusing. And to make it worse, it still wasnt compatible with 3rd edition software. But with just some tweaks, Nokia can turn Symian in to a workhorse touch OS, as well, and that is what they are doing right now, with Symbian^3 and Symbian^4. I guess, nokia really wasnt ready to release touch-phones, when they did. Perhaps, Maemo was always in their mind for future touchphones, just that the market shifted, begining with LG Prada, when it was fist shown of in september 2006. Touchscreen became the trend, and nokia didnt think that would happen for some years to come, thus maemo wasnt ready... and they trew Symbian in there instead.
Still symbian 5th edidtion doesnt suck either. It does a whole lot of things, it simply does not look awesome. And there is a lack in programmer support for the platform.

JonHolstein

Comments on

All MeeGo, all the time?

SolidSnake

Comments on

@SolidSnake
No, just higher end devices under the mobile computer Nseries brand.
How high in the portfolio Symbian will go is unclear. you will see many awesome media devices, and perhaps some camera devices still under Symbian. But its still not here, so dont get your hopes high on that.
But on the other hand, why would you want that, if it emulates Symbian touch or Symbian S60 5h edition as its realle called, there are not that many programs for it. Its the navigation software, and that will probably come in a MeeGo version. There is the sportstracker software, and hopefully even that will make it to MeeGo.
An emulator for S60 3rd edition would give us a whole lot of more apps, but then you need hardware keys, so really, that is only usable on devices with hardware keyboard, and there will be a lotout there, without it. So, we prorably wont get a emulator for that.

About the QT thing. If an application is made using QT, you can port it quite simply to MeeGo. Not meaning that every Symbian application will run on MeeGo. But the ones made with QT, that are worth it, you will se on MeeGo.
Also MeeGo is linux, and as MeeGo userbase starts to expand, you will se more and more linux apps under MeeGo.

If you want the N8 for its camera, the N9 is an unsure bet, rumors talk of 12 MP, but i kinda doubt that Nokia in just a few moths will repalace the N8 camera phone with a N9 that takes just as good pictures. Sure it might have 12 mp, but the sensor and the lens will probably be different, resulting in less performance in photos.
But probably still a pretty good mobile camera, since Nokia has been good on that for quit a while, just that they've almost only used 5mp censors.

When comparing to Evo, its a different story. I dont know if greece has a wimax network. And if you dont, half the point of that model is lost. Otherwise its a fast android with a really big screen.
Android has a lot of programmer support, so there are many applications. You wont see as many for MeeGo in the begining, but it really comes down to, if you really need that amout of applications just to get the ones you want.

I prefer the MeeGo Os thought, as its a real computer OS, running on a phone. It has real multitasking, and you choose if you want to close an applications, under Android, the OS does that for you, if you dont get 3rd party software.
MeeGo will likely be compatible with bluetooh keyboard, and bluetooth mice. And the N9 will porably have a HDMI out, so in theory, you got yourself a little computer there.
And in the future, you might be running MeeGo on more devices than your phone, a tablet, or netbook, or even laptop, or you might dual-boot a laptop.. and when doing that, you can use the same software on both your mobile and your computer. menaing that you can truly take a document on the go, and have full edit on your phone.

And probably with meego, you will not have to wait for Nokia to make a new version of the OS for your phone to get it, you will porobably be able just to download it as its out, and install it on your own.

JonHolstein

Comments on

"Direct from the Finnish horse's mouth" in this case meaning "indirectly from the Australian horse's paraphrasing of the other Australian horse's mouth".

sockatume
