Symbian is not getting old. S60 i.e Symbian^1 is getting old as is the UI called Avkon. S60 is out the window with the arrival of S^3 and Avkon will follow whenever S^4 is released. Judging an operating system just based on its UI is not very accurate. The icons are created according to scale in inches not pixels, so it doesnt matter what the res of the screen is, the size of the icon is still the same - please get a clue.

Having personally used S^3 on the N8, I didnt face any issues with the touch. Neither have I faced any issues with touch on the iPhone4 (and 3G before that). In fact the quality and response of touch on both of them is pretty similar (and heads and shoulders above any Android offering except perhaps the Evo 4G).
