My thoughts exactly. I was really hoping that Apple would have made the iPhone 4 at least 4+ inches. Sometimes you just need to make a minor revision, add a note, update a couple numbers in a spreadsheet, etc. Obviously if you have an iPad or laptop with you that's a better choice but increasingly people are looking to leave that stuff behind and only carry a SmartPhone so it's a nice option to have. As UptownDonkey mentioned people use office suites on smartphones to make quick edits, have documents to hand for emailing when on the go, and carry fewer devices.

The onscreen keyboard may not be perfect for lengthy typing but the ability for iOS4 to pair a bluetooth keyboard, use the iPad keboard dock, and possibly (hopefully) connect to a monitor using the dock-to-vga cable could easily increase the productivity potential.

If the iPad was actually differentiated from other iDevices in any way at all bar size, I wouldn't mind so much. But now they share the same processor, the same resolution, and the same apps.
