Droid X ad pokes fun at iPhone 4 antenna troubles
The world of corporate cheap shots has today been enriched in its number with one supersized ad for one supersized phone. BGR reports that Motorola took out a full-page spread in the New York Times on this final day of June, which was ostensibly dedicated to promoting the positives of its mighty Droid X. But Moto has also followed in the footsteps of Nokia in making a not so subtle jab at the latest king of the smartphone realm. According to the ad, one of the most important things about the Droid X is that:
Glad we got that established -- next Moto will be telling us the alarm clock on its phones works just fine too. Skip past the break for the untrimmed ad."It comes with a double antenna design. The kind that allows you to hold the phone any way you like and use it just about anywhere to make crystal clear calls."

I think this ad holds water because the Droid X can, you know, actually make calls.
@coolbho3000
Yes. Making calls is good. Alarm clocks? Seriously?
@coolbho3000
If users can hold their phone any way they choose, you are doing it wrong..
When will this madness end?
@coolbho3000
Aaaaand the feeding frenzy begins.
"Once you make a god bleed, the sharks come out to eat.."
@coolbho3000 WAY TO CAPITALIZE on Apples mistakes. GO MOTO
Apple should get sued, you know, for making PHONEy claims
(That the iPhone 4 can call people)
Also, the hostage said he couldn't stay long on the phone. he was tied up at the moment.
Agreed. Engadget adding the comment about the alarm clock was unnecessary. Motorola actually has a valid point here. However, for some reason, Engadget brushes it off as a smug ad and acts all snarky about it.
What about those Mac vs PC ads? Did those not count as smug? I see no difference here, if anything this is a little more civilized because it never calls the iPhone out by name.
@coolbho3000
Moto Engineering >>>>> Apple Marketing
@SamTatr - What PHONEy claims? Steve said it's magical! See, nothing up my sleeve. I put my little finger here and.....VOILA....the signal disappears!
@kchase731
yeah, apple really blew it when the made a phone that has sold 2 million units in a week. Totally blew it.
whys everybody always picking on me
@coolbho3000
If users can make phone calls, you blew it.
@coolbho3000
Hey, you're the guy who made SetCPU!!!! Best app ever!!! :D
@coolbho3000
Thanks to Apple, 360hold is now a promotable feature.
@coolbho3000
Yea but it lacks one key feature: gesture-based automatic call ending/dropping.
I don't want!!
@Eraser
Its funny but an alarm clock bug issue is no where near as a bad as flawed phone on the hardware level
@Eraser
P.C. = Personal Computer. It's not actually calling out any microsoft based manufacturing company by name. But other than that, you're right. It is a similar marketing strategy.
@coolbho3000 OH SNAP!
@Eraser The comment about the alarm clock would be taking a shot at the Sony Dash, I would assume.
@coolbho3000
Maybe Apple should rebrand their iPhone 4 as the iPad Nano...
@coolbho3000
Tone of engadget looks like they are back on Apple payroll again!!
@coolbho3000
Oh oh! No you didn't! No you didn't! Here come apple fans and they'll tear you a new one! I'm dying laughing!
@SamTatr
Never.
@coolbho3000
If they had more than one antenna, they blew it.
@coolbho3000
VLAD U MAD?
@SamTatr
Madness?
This is ENGADGET!
*kicks Steve Jobs down a pit*
@moonlitegram
"PC" may be manufacturer/company agnostic, but the ads consistently mentioned windows and windows vista by name. Those ads are a large part of why I hate Apple :)
@Eraser
I read the alarm clock comment as, it is EXPECTED that ALL phones should be able to make clear calls.
And Engadget did pwn Apple on this issue.
@neilspartacus
Probably just got a mail from jobs (and aol maybe?) about them not being happy with the un-advertising iPhone articles....
@sharms
Its also missing the revolutionary feature of video calling over Wi-Fi.
Iphone users claiming NOT to have experienced antenna issues in 3..2..1...

@TomSawyer
Your a funny man... Ok so they sold 2 million - 75% of them were iPhone 3g/3gs upgrades so yea 2 million doesn't really count for much now.
By the way everyone, the best way to communicate with a fish is to Drop them a line.
@moonlitegram lol... come on man you know Apple has used the word "Windows" a ton of times in their ads. Not just PC.
@yankdez What was your first clue?
@Eraser
Note to ENgadget: Apple does not like the media period. When you are employed by them they let it be known. Media is a tool to promote for Apple their are not and will not be buddies no matter how much ass you kiss.
STOP TRYING TO HARD guys....Steve will knock your door down to protect his baby!
@coolbho3000
Wow, life sucks Apple! Where have I seen something like this before? Wait, its in the switcher ads and Vista! Funny how your beast can come around and bite you.
@devildrifterx engadget, moto will brag about how its alarm clock works only if its discovered that the iphones doesn't... because droid does
@Madcat If your 'competition's users' can hold their phone any way they choose, you are doing it wrong.
@coolbho3000
iPhone is the new Windows Vista. It's like the Mac vs. PC commercials from Apple, but with the tables turned.
@TomSawyer
Actually it's two weeks (June 16th) and Android has sold more than the iPhone in the same period, so what's your point?
@coolbho3000
I'm pretty sure the Droid X can also create wormholes...
@Eraser
To be fair, and I actually do hate Apple with a (probably unhealthy) burning passion, they never did say Windows in those ads, they just said PC, which, ironically, Macs are.
@coolbho3000
lol to apple
@TomSawyer 2 million defaulty units yea thats a real sucess milestone
@coolbho3000
here we go again.. engadget trying to pick on droidX ad just coz it took on apple ....
and wats with that awful comparison to the alarm clock issue? you guys consider clock and antenna issue at the same level? pathetic. . .
@Eraser dude seriously? I am an ALL apple user and even I think this is funny. They take no sides. . . .other than that of jest. I dont think apple messed up as bad as everyone thinks, I think the bigger problem is At&t. But even I know apple screwed up and think its funny.
@iPhone4 Antenna
Coz your daddy Jobs claimed you were a "revolutionary new technology" which nobody else every thought of. Thats why.
