If memory serves me right, my credit union - DCU - has had check scanning on the PC for more than a couple years now and they were even one of the first ones to release this iphone app too. Actually, going to an ATM would still require getting out and driving out of the way to deposit the check....usually to the ATM outside of your bank anyways. You do realize the overwhelming majority of identity theft comes from traditional, physical means, right? Sorting through trash, looking over your shoulder at a checkout, etc? You're quite literally nine times safer by eliminating all physical traces of your banking info.

Any idiot can read your account number off a check or discarded statement and rob you blind. You'd be surprised at how few safeguards are in place to stop that sort of thing...most people are so paranoid about electronic security, that the overlook the basics that thieves have been exploiting since well before the internet.

On the other hand, intercepting and decrypting a 128-bit SSL connection is a challenge for an organization like the FBI. You can imagine how rarely it happens to average Joes.

That being said, online banking is (with a bank that knows what they're doing) pretty darn safe and trustable. Sometimes more so than doing banking in person as there's LESS chance of somebody recording down info as you make a request (deposit, widthdraw, balance inquiry, etc)

You can do quickpay (person to person) using chase.com or the mobile site too. You can transfer to any person. They don't even have to have a chase bank account. So the fact that this technology is coming to the main stream financial players is a big deal. I've been depositing checks via my iPhone for a couple of months now. They were the first to offer deposit at home using your scanner. They also offer the best insurance, investments, and customer service. USAA really knows what it means to serve. The great thing is, you don't have to be military to be a member of the bank, anyone can call them for banking and investments.
