Everybody thinks that HP just bought Palm to stick on printers, do you really think they would spend $1.2 bil on printer software? Yes, that might be a part of the plan, but not the only part. Think of it from a business standpoint: and employer gives all his employees a pixi and a webOS netbook. Those are seemlessly integrated in the office envornment because the printer also runs webOS. Now think of it from a consumer standpoint: the person buys a pre and a webOS tablet. Bingo, the paid apps can be used on both devices and the best mobile OS is now on 2 devices they use daily. Go do some research and read one article outside of engadget, Better yet, watch 5 minutes of the interview with the hp CTO that has already been linked in the comments several times. Hp has no plans to involve themselves with palm's smartphones, the CTO basically said they plan on letting palm act as an autonomous unit, with access to hp's pocket book. The only layoffs that are going to happen will be in administrative roles, where palm wasn't strong anyways, and the positions are redundant. All of the engineers will remain, which is what we all want to see anyways.

I for one am very optimistic to see what palm will do now that they have the money to fully develop their hardware and software.
