So the masses have spoken, and for the sixth episode of Choose my Adventure, I'll be headed into Sony Online Entertainment's Star Wars Galaxies. No game seems to divide MMO players as deeply as this one, if the comments on... oh... every post ever written about it on the internet are any indication. With that said, since I have precisely zero power or influence with anyone at SOE, let's skip off the debates and focus on the fun stuff -- getting started on our new adventure!
First things first, I should take a moment to lay out my personal background with Star Wars Galaxies. While my copy of the game and prior play experience dates from pre-CU/NGE, the game simply didn't hook me as a long-term player. Don't get me wrong -- I love Star Wars, and I did think the game was fun. However, having just come off of a several-year MMO relationship with EverQuest at the time, I wasn't quite ready to put that kind of time into another MMO, no matter how cool it was. So I put Star Wars Galaxies down -- until now.
That disclaimer out of the way, this week you all get to vote on the server I'll play on, my character's gender and race, and most importantly, the specific path in Star Wars Galaxies I'll follow during our adventure. So enough talking! On with the voting!
If I have to explain this one, you really don't belong on the Internets -- at least not without a parent handy who can explain it.
There's a tremendous listing of all the races on the Star Wars Galaxies site, which I'll point you towards if you'd like to see pictures, and read up on the specific attributes each race has.
Here's the important one! These professions are fairly involved, so I'm going to again point to the Star Wars Galaxies site if you've no idea how they play out. (That said, anyone who has seen the movies should at least have a vague idea!) You'll also notice that there are four options for Trader. This is because the game gives you four options on the creation screen. Thus, you get those choices too.
I'm purposely leaving off the EU servers, despite having access to them on my login screen. Ping time may seem an odd concern, but I'd rather not exacerbate any lag I might encounter with added geographical distance. Besides, nobody likes playing with someone who gets disconnected all the time.
These polls will run until Sunday (7/11), when the voting will close. From there, I'll get my shiny new character all set up, run the basic tutorial, and be ready to meet you in next week's column!
