No problem. If you disagree, perhaps you can point out an actual iPad owner that has mentioned finding some use for this. The thousands of games already available for iPad are already keeping owners entertained and I think you'll be hard pressed to find many agonizing over the lack of punch-the-monkey ads.

I'm with Graham, I came from windows apprehensively to my iPad, haven't looked back. While this is sweet for the kids who play flash games, I'm only excited for it as a proof of concept until flash videos run.

Also, notice how it's not Flash running constantly! It's Flash on Demand! So Flash doesn't start running as soon as a page loads up, you have to tap to activate it, which is great and should kill performance as many had thought. I think it's time Flash got put into the app store, don't have it pre-installed but give people the choice is what I say.

Actual iPad owner here who has a use for this. First, I'd really like to watch Hulu on it without paying $10 a month. And second, I'd like to watch videos for a course I'm taking that are only available in flash.

Beyond that, there are some websites I frequent with flash components, and I come across at least a couple on a daily basis which require flash either for navigation or for accessing content. Why don't you sell it and keep your netbook then? Not to sound hostile, but it makes no sense to carry both around anyway, so why not just keep the netbook?

The rest of you can quote your stats all you want, I was on that side of the fence merely months ago, yet I haven't run into many issues requiring flash that I need to hop on my computer for. Besides streaming tv to my tv at home, flash is worthless.

I'm sure there are niche categories of users and developers that will require this, but for the majority of users, advanced or not, you can do fine without flash. As it stands, playing flash games probably isn't too high on most iPad owners lists, most people still playing flash games aren't outbthere buying ipads, they are a younger demographic that couldn't afford one even if they wanted one, which most likely don't.n

I prefer the form factor, the weight, and the battery life of the iPad over the netbook. But I hate the lack of flash and multitasking (looking forward to iOS 4).

Fact is, this Flash is something I need on the internet as it exists today. I'm tired of periodically running into sites that present me with a blank page or being forced to run their stripped down mobile versions even though the iPad is big enough to view the full pages. No, I bought the iPad to develop on, but I wish it would replace my netbook. I can do everything on my iPad I would want to do on my netbook except flash. I don't see why I shouldn't be able to access any website on a device made specifically for the internet.

You said a use "for this" - since it doesn't handle video and the uses you mentioned require it, I'm not sure I see how you have a use for this.

I agree that many sites still use Flash for video but as I've repeatedly pointed out, there are not a lot of other uses. Yes, crappy games and banners but what else? Anything actually useful, the odd UI piece that a lazy dev didn't bother coding backwards compatibility for? Didn't think so.

@patp, I have already given props to those involved with this, it is indeed a nice piece of work. However, just because something is technologically impressive doesn't mean the vast majority of users will have any use for it.

I can agree mobile flash has limited utility, however it just seems that todays web content is by and large delivered via flash plugin. I'm not gonna say that "lazy devs" use flash, because coding for flash is a respectable feat in itself.

Apple vowing to not support flash in it's mobile browser seems to a bit of backward thinking in a rapidly forward thinking medium.. My thinking, as Steve's is (so he says) is delivering the best product for consumers. If so much of the web relies on flash for content delivery,why no offer the option to install flash as an app? I see no reason not to give your consumers that option. Of course you can say (as he has) that flash would be a resource hog, but what app wouldn't be? You can only get so far developing with the simulator. There are various idiosyncrasies between the device and the simulator, not to mention the multitiouch capabilities of the simulator are very basic. Furthermore, in order to properly evaluate app performance, you need it on the device. There's really no two ways about it.

Anyway, I never said I was surprised by the lack of flash and I never said I didn't want the iPad. I merely am stating that after owning and using the device for a period of time I have found it insufficient to fill my needs. One of these deficiencies is solved with backgrounder, and hopefully the other will be solved by Frash, and I will have nothing more to complain about. ]]>Jul 7th 2010 3:03PM
