Verizon and Sprint, on the other hand are known as CDMA networks for their voice network but their 3G network uses something commonly known as EVDO (or sometimes CDMA2000).

The people who named these things were engineers and probably thought they were being very precise with their naming. But it sure makes for mass confusion!
