Apple will become a niche player as history has shown them to be in the desktop/laptop market. However, in the phone segment, they simply will not have the best looking or functioning hardware, which means far harder competition.

Also google is forward thinking. They are actively working to move MANY classic 'apps' to the web. HTML5 in browser is a step, but so is NaCl and PNaCl that allows web apps to securely run native code across x86 *and* ARM devices at full speed and with things like accelerated 3D. The end result is a market as universal as typing in a URL, and near-identical performance and capability we're used to on the phone and desktop, and making the hardware or OS far less important.

*offtopic* Which, might I add, is why Chrome OS will be so enticing to many users. Native apps in a minimalist web browser *is* the way to go. Also Ubuntu is making great strides to include cloud functionality, and that OS could be very appealing to many as well that need more than just web apps (eg. development environment or server).

This is precisely the opposite of control that the other large players, *cough* McApple *cough*, are trying to cling to and enforce. I'm glad that google exists. Without it or similar companies, we'd be trapped in a McApple controlled world, and this wonderful progress would take far longer to come about.

Deadley

Comments on T-Mobile roadmap leaks out, plenty of Android in store

@MagnetMan

Signed! The 2011 version of this road map will likely have Apple's devices on it. The same is probably true of Verizon and Sprint.
