Slip on your fine silk smoking jacket and light up a victory cigar US Android fans, the latest comScore numbers are out for the three-month period ending in May 2010. The most notable trend spotted was a 4 point (up from 9.0% to 13.0%) quarterly increase in Google's Android market share as all other smartphone OS subscribers declined. ComScore also saw
Motorola's slide continue, slipping behind LG now for a third place US finish as Samsung continued to bolster its dominant position. Expect the numbers to be jostled a bit next quarter when Apple's iPhone 4 numbers are factored in. Just don't expect to see the Android numbers suffer, especially with the Samsung
Galaxy S launching on all the major US carriers before the quarter is done.
[Thanks, Jeremy]
@Jollybee Did you forget iPhone 4 came out? It's gonna shit on android for sales for a few weeks. But what matters is competition is great for us.
@Revolutionary Wow not to call her a name but I can't help it. She's dumb! Did she try iPhone 4? Android is not better then iPhone 4 and vice versa. Grow up.
@Mister Warmth
uh...granted Jobs is a class-I a-hole who makes shiny shite but what does his battle with cancer and the fact he is a cancer survivor got to do with any of this?
@CoinOperatedBoi
If your girlfriend wants to continue to use iTunes she can download the iTunes Agent. Once she has synched everything over to her brand new android device I would recommend dumping iTunes for good and downloading DoubleTwist and the DoubleTwist app, and the Tunees app.
I would also recommend her getting the EVO since it does have FM radio. Comes in handy when you are out and about and need to catch up on local news. Now someone needs to develop a local HD T.V. app.
For the FM radio to work she will need wired headphones. I got the iFrogz:

Android just works better for what I use it for. Now if I could just talk the higher up's into going live with activesync on the Exchange server so I don't have to use a third party app to fake it over OWA I would be set.
@4u2nv
Thank God.
A reasonable person who likes smartphones.
If you like Android you do not have to constantly hate on Apple and vice versa.
I hate Steve Jobs not Apple products. Apple products are brilliantly designed. If they didn't have a nazi for a CEO I would gladly buy their devices.
Hm maybe more reports like these will show apple that exclusivity in the US is clearly bad and that people are willing to use an android device over an iPhone happily.
C'mon engadget, are you trying to kill my eyes?
@Dustin
A 1% drop probably isn't going to make much of a difference to Apple in the long run. They're making choices based on real profits -- not market share. I think you'd need to see a much more dramatic market shift for Apple to panic and buy their way out of their contractual obligations with AT&T. (or give up the revenue sharing -- however that deal is structured)
@UptownDonkey
Good point. But all apple had to do was release an iPhone on verizon or other carriers this year to really cause some damage to android's growth. Oh well, their loss.
@HighestRanked2 atnt doesnt really acept any android phones into the there market. thats why the iphone dominates there. atnt has the aria, and what other phones? to my knowleget hats like the only one that they actually sell.
@Dustin
you know on iPhone Launch day it launched in 9 countries and in a couple months there will much more
@HighestRanked2
"Take a look and see what the sales ratio of iPhones VS Androids is on AT&T. When given a choice, the consumer will chose thr iPhone overwhelmingly."
Yah, like AT&T has an awesome android lineup at the moment....Your comment isn't valid until they get a decent Android phone that isn't restricted/locked down by AT&T....nice try....
@HighestRanked2 AT&T has android phones? Last I checked they had one that was crippled to be more iphone-like (can only install apps from the market)
Just a small snapshot of things to come over the next couple years. Will be fun being a fan of android watching it grow and continue to improve on an already fine product.
Incoming flame war... =/
@strawe
flame shield up
@strawe
1 am here, so I am going to bed thank god! Although will be fun to wake up in the morning with all the flaming and get some good chuckles in-between sips of coffee when I first get to work!
@strawe
When the Americans wake up...it's real.
@strawe. Incoming I care way to much about apple and android because I don't can't get laid war.
Looks like 1985 all over again ;) haha
I'm still shocked RIM hasn't lost more market share to iPhone & Android over the last year. It really defies a lot of assumptions about the need for speed, features, constant OS updates, etc. Starting to think they have that market completely locked up.
Of course when looking at the Apple numbers we have to factor in non-SmartPhone iOS devices. Seems like this is going to be a huge area of growth for Apple this year with the iPad and updated iPod Touch. If you want to really look at the strength of the platform (among developers, users, etc) it's good to consider the entire installed base.
@UptownDonkey
If you just use for phone for making calls, texting and email you cant do better than a blackberry. The build quality and experience is great and if you dont need all the little extra features you will get by being connected to the apple or andriod app store there is no need or reason to make the switch.
@UptownDonkey No kidding. I've been doing some app testing on a Blackberry Storm2 device at work recently, and I can barely stand to use the thing. It's got a UI that makes Windows Mobile 6 look user-friendly in comparison, the RIM desktop software is biggest piece of bloatware I've had the displeasure of using in ages (I'm pretty sure I can cover the software deployment functions I need in about 10MB worth of stuff... So what the heck do I need a 258MB download for?) and when you start getting into loading and unloading apps it takes forever to do anything. Even so, every time I complain about having to deal with the freakin' Blackberry again on my Facebook status, I always seem to get at least 3 or 4 Blackberry fans insisting that I must be doing something wrong, and talking about how much they love the blasted things. I just don't get it.
@UptownDonkey The main advantage Blackberries have over other smartphones is that they have a rock-solid security system and features that make it ideal for corporate and government use. Android is still young, iPhone is about as secure as a cheap suitcase lock, and Nokia is non-existant in the North American smartphone market.
@UptownDonkey I agree I was thinking the same thing. Actually I was talking to a cousin of mine from Dominican Republic and he tells me that BB rule the entire country. You can find an iPhone or Droid phone but by and large BB is 95% of users. The reason is the rock solid reliability which is necessary in a rather hostile environment (heat, water, etc) and, get this, the Blackberry Messenger (BBM)! Yea, that IM app that requires a pin number! I was shocked. Apparently, its free and unlimited and extends from one country to another. My cousin goes to St Lucia for work all the time and is still connected to everyone through BBM for no additional cost.
So I've had an HTC; Touch Pro, Touch Pro2, Incredible and now rock an Evo 4G but HTC isn't even in the top 5 smartphone makers by volume. Maybe they are too specialized in the top end and don't make enough phones for the "every man"?
@theaussiepunk
HTC has only recently started to make a serious push into advertising in major markets. That's a huge factor in the buying choices normal people make. I think what's hurting them more than anything else in the short term is not being able to meet demand. Maybe it's time they scale back their variation in models and really focus on delivering a smaller number of models at higher volumes. Again, going back to normal people, lots of them are going to walk out of the store with *something* -- if the HTC Incredible isn't in stock they don't just wait a month. Serious supply issues really kill the momentum of a product launch. By the time they start delivering the Incredible & Evo in high volume the NEXT BIG THING will already be on the shelves. (Droid X?)
@theaussiepunk
The chart up there is for all mobile phones, not just smartphones. HTC doesn't make dumbphones that I know of, which outsell smartphones.
@theaussiepunk A factor in this may be that some HTC phones are not labeled as HTC phones on the device level as a manufacturer. Many of devices such as the Droid Incredible, T-Mobile G1 and Nexus One are often found with the carrier as the Manufacturer in these types of reports.
So the Incredible has Verizon listed as the Manufacturer, the G1 has T-Mobile and the Nexus One has Google.
I pull a lot of backend data reports just like what ComScore would pull and this is simple a function of the way the phone is labeled internally. Whether or not ComScore takes this into account I don't know...they should.
You will often find the same phone in lists one with Verizon as the maker and HTC as the maker on the phones not directly sold through or for Verizon.
Not saying they still wouldn't be out of the Top 5 but it could be a factor.
lol and next report apple will be through the roof, look at the dates, no one bought iphones before the 4 came out.
also most of those android phones were buy one get one free .. you get what you pay for hahaha
@adamjustadam
*sprays troll-be-gone*
@adamjustadam You sure got that wisdom from your mom.
@adamjustadam
Yeah... it's installed base not quarterly sales, Einstein.
@adamjustadam
The current rate of Android sales is 160000 a day, that translates to 58 million phones a year, how many iPhones does Apple sells a year?, answer: about half of that volume.
@rj7855 160,000 phone's a day my big iPhone carrying @$$!
@Blippy0524
huh? you have a big ass?
Sorry to tell you, but the number (160,000) was released in June and is expected to increase.
@rj7855
Well since you're talking about the sales of an OS, why aren't you factoring in sales of iPod Touch and iPad?
Furthermore, what actual difference does it make to you ( or anyone but google ) how many devices are running android os? Since they all have ( in some cases, wildly ) differing hardware specs and software versions it certainly doesn't mean there will be more devices to develop for due to the fragmentation. That is, of course, unless the developer aims at the weakest device and uses older API's which doesn't help those with the latest high end Android phone.
@rj7855 You think you can just extend that daily rate out until the end of the year? A couple weeks ago the iPhone sold 600,000 phones in one day, doesn't mean they will maintain it until December ;)
@darksharpie That's the difference. The rate for Android is a sustained rate. The numbers for iPhone are just launch event numbers. Also this statistic is about market share. 77% of those iPhone sales were upgrades and do increase market share. All this without Android being all it could be and shortages of the Incredible.
@rj7855
Actually the number you quoted isn't sales. It is activations, and the new number is 165,000 per day averaged for the first 6 months of this year.
Oh and look at Microsoft tanking. I am very interested to see how popular Windows Phone 7 will be.
@theaussiepunk
So far, there is no momentum, so any effect could only be felt next year, and that is when the Android 3 will take off - it is going to be a stiff competition.
@theaussiepunk Yeah, no KIN on that chart... Hmmm. Maybe when those 504 models start to turn around on Ebay?
That's about a 40% grow in market share! Way to go Android!
Finally, common sense is back!
Microsoft is about to loose its 3rd place - may be by next month!
When is Bill Gates' second coming?
@NewBie
he's busy in Africa
But remember, these statistics are out of date as of May.
With the iPhone 4 / iOS 4 launch, the Apple share has most likely went up whilst other platforms fell in that timeframe.
@dragonfli
Perhaps. This is installed base though, not sales. Given about three quarters of iPhone 4 sales are to repeat customers I'm not sure the swing will be massive.
@dragonfli
Seems the article stated that.
Unfortunately, it will depend on new users not those changing their iPhones to make a real difference.
