Apple's Magic Trackpad gets FCC approval?
We're admittedly using our Jump To Conclusions Mat a little bit here, but we're pretty sure Apple's Magic Trackpad (or whatever they'll end up calling it) just got FCC approval -- and considering how tightly Apple usually manages its FCC dealings, this could mean it'll be announced as early as this week. A device known only by its model number A1339 is the culprit here, described as a "Bluetooth Device" used in conjunction with a MacBook without any associated filings for WiFi or WWAN networks. The ultra-rough label location diagram is definitely the right shape for the accessory, and what's interesting is that the test report was completed way back in October of 2009. Has Apple seriously been sitting on this thing for the better part of a year? Keep a close eye on the Apple Store for this one, folks.
Update: It's been pointed out to us that the previous leak shows a model number of A1339... so yep, there you have it. Thanks, Eric!
Update 2: In case you needed any more evidence, page 45 of the test report specifically identifies the product being tested as a "Bluetooth Trackpad." Thanks, Tobias!

It's gonna be "Magical"!
@asharillc You're touching it wrong.
@asharillc
As long as we don't have to hold it, it will be revolutionary.
@nickspohnholtz
HELLO.
Don't use my name anyhow.
Only some things are worthy to be called Revolutionary.
@asharillc

the entire thing's hilarious, but skip to 1:10 for the ultimate solution to the death grip
@asharillc
Yes it will!!!
@skyblaze The Force is strong with that video. It is also scarily true. Although, I don't know how Emperor Jobs obtained my helmet
@asharillc
Yay! Now we can use something that us, MacBook Pro users, have had all along!!!
@asharillc
It's a right handed device.
@skyblaze THAT was funny! LMFAO
@asharillc But seriously, Apple's trackpads are the best in their class.
I would love to have one of these...I really like the trackpad on my MBP.
@rkdiddy Personally, I'd much rather have a Jump to Conclusions Mat
@jacres ROTFL at Jump to conclusions mat. This is why I love Engadget.
Sooo, this is a less advanced wacom?
Hmm wonder why people would by a touchpad like this :S
But then some people have bought the Iphone 4 :D
@Techtrino
:D
Initiating Downrank sequence..............
-Mouse moved
-Mouse pressed
-Gum chewed
-Ass kicked
Downrank sequence complete.
@Accelerator Indeed
@Techtrino
This will be perfect for home theater navigation, dumbass.
I dislike using a mouse when I'm sitting on my couch.
PLUS, wth does the iPhone got to do with this?
@Revolutionary
So do I, check out logitech ;) They have you covered
@Techtrino You're either an obnoxious 10 year old or a Gungan. Either way FORCE CHOKE
@Lord Vader
you will thoroughly enjoy the video i posted above
@Lord Vader
Nope 25 years, with two masters degrees in engineering, and Danish :D
But seriously, why buy this when you can get a wacom :S Because it is apple?
Lord Vader I knew apple was the Dark side, and that Steve Jobs aka the emperor your "boss" but do you need one of these, dont you have inbuilt Bluetooth?
@Techtrino Either you can predict the future or you are making guesses as to what this product will actually BE when it is "Announced". I find your lack of faith in an unannounced and possibly non-existant product disturbing. And yes, My helmet does have Bluetooth 3.1, and my chest plate has a built in trackpad
@Techtrino It seems to me like it would function like the Wacom Bamboo Fun without the drawing part:
http://www.wacom.com/bamboo/bamboo_fun.php
I guess some advantages would be that it's bluetooth and the gestures might be better, possibly also cheaper but I'd still rather get the Wacom to get the drawing:

Apple have a thing about the stylus. If Apple attached this to their bluetooth keyboard then it might be an idea, otherwise, it's just another two batteries to replace.
I'd consider buying one.
This would be awesome, but I feel like Apple would definitely take this a step further then just a external version of the MBP trackpad, though just that by itself would put it in a league of it's own.
Well see, I'm excited though.
And @ Techtrino
Why is buying an iPhone 4 a bad move??
if you want to be a stereotypical uninformed consumer that hears and reads the iPhone has a awful antenna, lets use some real facts as a counter, drops 1 less call per 100 than the 3GS, a phone that never had this type of press about it's antenna.
Or maybe it's the proximity sensor? Software fix coming soon, the phone is brand new.
Much rather my iPhone than.... Yikes I dunno what else.
@rmbrown09
So how many calls is that?
@rmbrown09 Acutally, the iPhone 4 drops 1 MORE call per 100. You should really do your own research before telling others that they are "uninformed."
@rmbrown09:
Sigh...
iPhone 3Gs, never lost it's signal when held. Never had killed data connections when held. And, even though less than 1 call per 100, dropped fewer calls. All while not being touted as having the better antenna of the two.
iPhone 3Gs, iPhone 3G, and the original iPhone. All of which NEVER had proximity issues.
The problem people are having with the phone is that it's acting like a 1st gen product. Don't buy into everything Apple tells you, they're trying to cover their asses. The phone does have issues. Buying an iPhone 4 is a bad move. It solidifies in Apple's mind that they can continue to make and sell faulty hardware while never fixing it because their fans will buy it either way.
@rmbrown09
Hmm why would you buy an Iphone all together, it is not well build, does not keep battery very well, has a poor reception (all of them) does not do Flash, I mean the list goes on and on, its just not a very good phone. However, people who needs a simple interface, go for the iphone, my mom has one, she likes it.
I prefer good old Symbian s60 or Rim OS, love my BB 9700, but my e52 is just a better phone.
@Slog Acutally, the iPhone 4 drops LESS THAN 1 MORE call per 100. You should really do your own research before preaching to others to do it.
@Techtrino In fact it is the most solid built phone. Feels absolutely premium in your hands, no plastic junk, no tacky buttons. Completely solid metal and glass. It doesn't get any better.
Battery life? If the iPhone 4's battery is bad in your opinion, you had better hope you never get something like an EVO. My buddy right now in the next room is already at 75%, and hes been teaching all day, barely using it. Im sitting at 92%, and guess what I am replaying to these comments on...
Like I said, you are a stereotypical uninformed consumer.
@Jordan they are loosing fans this way
@trickards but when it comes to these big corporations, "less than 1" usually means 0.99
there was also a WSJ article that said the average drop rate for AT&T phones is 1-2 per 100, so 1.5% for average. if you take that as the average for the 3GS, then the iPhone 4 drops almost 75% more calls than it's predecessor. that's pretty significant.
@maveric101 crap. its*
I don't really get the point of this. Is it just something to connect to desktops?
@JonCha
Probably. It would probably also be more useful than a remote for the remote for the rumored upgrade to the Apple TV, as you wouldn't want to browse the web with one of those.
@JonCha I suspect it will be for the laptops.
I just can't see that there is a huge demand for it on the desktops, seeing as though so many graphics artists would rather use a mouse/Cintiq.
@JonCha
If your desktop has Bluetooth, than yeah. It's mostly for laptops though. Think of if as a multi-touch trackpad that you can place wherever you want to, instead of having to use a mouse for all your input selections.
Rebirth of Fingerworks product. About time!!
Just don't touch it.
i want a bigger one, ipad size… apple enters the tablet business yes!
*Yawn
Apple TV Remote
@d0mth0ma5 that's right.
Quick! Someone make a sleek tray that fits the Wireless keyboard and this thing, for effortless couchsurfing.
how many "mysterious" fcc filings come through everyday? Engdgt, can you just make a hub for this? I'd be interested in other filings (not just Apple everything, and sparse of soon to be coming smartphones)
Whatever it is it'll be overpriced, will be upgraded in 6 months so all apple fans go and buy another and you'll need to purchase something else to use it properly ... but they'll still sell a million!
This would be the perfect remote for the new Apple TV.
@Maxipad
Exactly
I've been exclusively using my laptop as a home theater PC - hooked up to my plasma TV
I've been lamenting not having a good HTPC keyboard with a nice MbookPro type track pad - All the other HTPC keyboards are jokes - as is what i have to deal with now - an apple BT keyboard and a logitech BT mouse atop a binder
If this is what we think it is - i will be picking one up the moment it lands
