It looks like HP is really serious about making webOS its backbone OS for everything (following Apple's footsteps with iOS), including its webOS slate, its webOS printers, its webOS netbooks (which could be a great entry-level PC for so many people that don't own a PC still). If they can get the Developers behind them (and its feasible), then they can really compete head to head with the iPad 3.0 (when Macs and PCs are just for us geeks and iPads and PalmPads are what most people own as their primary PC - circa 2013). :-)

TreoKing

Comments on HP CEO: Palm could end up a 'sub-brand' of the company

@PalmKing

i think webOS is much MUCH better than the other 2. HP needs to make sure Palm is not only riding that wave, but contributing towards it. That's the biggest way they can compete, IMO - by becoming a major player in advancing web technologies. Most people have HP computers at home, and, to a degree, Palm still has some worth in smartphone mindshare. From a brand/marketing perspective, this could be a potent combination, but I don't think that either brand can stand on its own at this point. HP and Palm both produced great phones, and I think that a lot of people still remember that (iPaqs for businessmen/prosumers, Treos/Centros/hell-just-Palm-in-general for, well, just about anyone). It would be very similar to HTC and Google's devices, where HTC and Google are both branded on devices. While HTC is just now getting into the minds of the average consumer, Google has a lot of power in that regards, so the combination is rather effective from multiple standpoints. If HP does this right, they could really make an impact in the market.

Alex Padilla

Comments on HP CEO: Palm could end up a 'sub-brand' of the company

no megusta HP

caprice

Comments on HP CEO: Palm could end up a 'sub-brand' of the company

I feel this would be a mistake. Palm, despite having been sold to HP, has a namesake that is respected and has been for decades. Their name is synonimous with cutting edge mobile tech.

Their brand recognition is strong and plays well to the demographic they're gunning for.

HP should really allow Palm to run on its own for smartphone and consumer mobile products and let WebOS be the identifier on HP tech that uses it. This would fit better and allow continued capitalization of the Palm Identity.

Thor e

Comments on HP CEO: Palm could end up a 'sub-brand' of the company

@Thor e

I think this is the absolute right move.If you ask people, what about a Palm everyone thinks of the Treo. Palm may not have the sells it once had in the smartphone arena, but it still has a strong reputation. HP, in the smartphone arena, on the other hand. Not so strong. Actually, not strong at all. I think they should think twice before stamping HP on any smartphones.
