I don't think you would have said this had you realized the target audience. It is not for wealthy people but bringing the poor masses into the fold in an affordable way. With the Nano, it was not exactly the poor (because gas is expensive). But it was still targeted to a diff audience. No. "Poverty" in somewhere like the US is completely different than poverty in somewhere like India. You haven't seen poverty until you've been to places like that.

If they want to sell that to you for $35 then, great. But it would cost them much more than that so they'd be selling every one at a huge loss.

Quick analysis of the component costs:
Low cost ARM System on Chip = $8
2GB RAM = assuming you can somehow connect commodity DRAM to a mobile ARM chip, you're looking at around $30. (2GB of Mobile DRAM would be around $100. I don't know of any ARM chips that even support 2GB of RAM)
WiFI = $5
Flash memory = $5
Power management = $2
PCB = $5
Touch screen / audio CODEC = $2
7" LCD with resistive touch = $20
Discrete components = $5
Connectors = $4
Battery = $3
Casing = $3
Assembly and testing charge = $10
Subtotal = $102
You'll lose about 3% of these things in manufacture, so it's effectively about $105.
And then you'll need a box and manuals and cables and chargers. And distribution. And payback for the development. And margin for the shop.

I am sure they could hit about $150 if they produced something that was made from the worst components but $35? No way.

@everybody else - they buy the same components from the same people. Except they have no buying history so why would anybody subsidise them and sell stuff well below manufacturing costs? Margins on components aren't exactly huge.
