For HDD's we have eSata and FireWire, and for anything else, USB2.0 is plenty fast. It's gotta start somewhere. Plus, the likelihood of USB 3.0 devices gaining acceptance is much higher considering that 95% of the computers in the world will never use Firewire... and eSATA is not really an ideal solution for Flash drives. (no power, some hot-swap issues)

In other words... USB 3.0 will be the successor to the wildly popular USB 2.0.
