There is now something that's more than quadraphonic sound, we now have pentaphonic (and higher!) sound for home theaters. Nothing wrong with stereoscopic photos. You just have to squint hard and print the photos and use the viewer ... but the end result was not compelling enough for most people to consider it worth the effort. I'm reading the current fad for 3D the same way. Niche - probably. They won't have to pay for what they view as mediocre implementations of the possibilities of 3D entertainment just to 'keep up', and 2. If the current formats die a swift death then perhaps the manufacturers will concentrate on better ideas for 3D, more holographic/interactive technologies.
