Why?

What are they supposed to come up with?
Another grid of different looking icons?
Alienate their tens of millions strong base (like Microsoft did when they killed WinMob and went with a new UI) when RIM is still at the top and growing?

(side note: Microsoft literally killed the blackberries only business competitor and it is far from certain businesses will want to convert to Windows Phone 7. iPhones/Androids have gained little traction and have years to catch up to what security/admin features that Blackberries offer. Though I like what Microsoft is doing and they needed to do it with the losses because they were completely flat-lining, I think that it would be a huge mistake to mess with a completely new UI when blackberry is still extremely popular and sales are still growing)

The main problems they had were touchscreen versions capabilities (which 6.0 and the 9800 /Storm 3 seems to handle nicely) and browser (again 6.0 and new webkit browser). They have upgraded the media capabilities as well and streamlined/added the transitions (which can be done in 5.0 with themes, which I have made myself).

I think the problem here is that with many of the new features iOS4 is touting (e.g. partial multitasking/folders/wallpapers) are already done and done well on blackberries for years. There really is not much needed to actually add anymore.

They offer almost every single form factor/price point you can think of:
- small candybar (two different keypads)
- medium candybar
- large candybar
- flip
- vertical slider
- touchscreen

Horizontal keyboards are the only thing they don't offer and they are bringing out a tablet style (rumour still but likely).

The have a ton of features and choices, superior communication setup (BBM, Push, email, unified inbox etc.) and very secure and keep moving forward.

Only down 0.4% US smartphone marketshare in a quarter where all but Android loss more, and a quarter in which no new blackberries were released. BlackBerry subscriber account base grew 65% over the prior fiscal year to over 41 million, with a record 4.9 million net new subscriber accounts added in Q4. BlackBerry smartphone shipments grew more than 40% over the prior fiscal year to 37 million. This is not getting killed, especially when you haven't released a new model.
