Canadian iPhone 4 launch details emerge: Rogers offers 6GB for $30, iPad sharing for $20 (update: Bell's iPad deal cheaper)
The iPhone 4 may be launching on all the major Canadian carriers tomorrow, but we're only just now starting to get the actual details on what they'll be offering. Rogers is the first out of the gate and, for a change, it looks like folks in the US may just be a tad jealous of their northern neighbors. It's not only offering the iPhone 4 for a further discounted price -- $159 for the 16GB and $269 for the 32GB on a three-year contract (for both new and existing customers eligible for a hardware upgrade) -- but it's bringing back its 6GB data plan for $30 a month as well. On top of that, Rogers is also offering a new iPad sharing plan that will let you share those 6GB between the two devices for an extra $20 a month. Still no official word from the other carriers, but MobileSyrup has turned up a leak that suggests Bell will be offering 6GB for $30 as well, and iPad sharing for just $10 a month -- although that's yet to be confirmed. We'll keep you posted as more plans are announced.
Update: Bell just flipped the switch, and their numbers are largely the same with one notable exception -- iPad data sharing is an additional $10 a month instead of $20, just as had been rumored. Thanks, everyone!

You know its Sad when Canada gets cheaper Data plans than the usa. $30 for 6gb vs ATT with $25 and 2gb
@Hydra
But we got 3 year contracts
3 FREAKING YEARS OF SLAVERY!!!!!
@Hydra Well, in canada you almost always get more for your money - except for fat in your food and wars paid for with your tax money.
@Hydra
do you have to sign up for 3 years contract with AT&T?
I didn't think so. stop complaining
@Hydra
Really sad that you can't tether the iPhone to the iPad (without jailbreaks).
@cjheechul in the US is 2 years contract with AT&T
@Hydra
These are only limited time promotions. We'll go back to paying $30 for 500MB soon enough.
@Hydra
Why is it sad that Canada may have a better deal than the US? Is there some unwritten law that the US must have it better than everyone else?
@AppleNews
but you guys have the option to upgrade after 1 year.
Rogers had this but last time I checked, they no longer have this (except iphone maybe). Correct me if I'm wrong.
Telus only lets u upgrade after a year and for only $150 less than regular price (which means Droid is $400). Full upgrade possible after 2 1/2 years. Not sure about Bell.
@cjheechul not everyone in Canada with 3yr contract. Here in Quebec, we have a law for that ... no contract and small cancel fee http://p.ly/kIaJx
@Bahumbug Only because you're afraid of war and standing up for what you believe in.
@zinj No, but in case you haven't noticed, Canada gets f*cked over in terms of wireless service.
@cjheechul That's only when you buy it with a contract right? If you buy it unlocked I guess there is no need of slavery.
@BlkRb0t
So you would rather spend the amount of a low end laptop for the "freedom"?
I wouldn't call that a freedom. A cell phone should not cost as much as a laptop. I mean gimme a break ipod touch is 200? You can't tell me that adding phone function to it costs $400 dollars!
Either make the unlocked cell phones cheaper or make the contract shorter.
@kingofwale,
How often do you switch carriers? Is three years REALLY that big a deal?
It's not like Bell or Telus are priced completely different, so where would you go even if you weren't tied to a contract?
@cjheechul
Amen to that. I never get this whole overpricing thing. But they do get away with it anyways. A phone that costs $200 to make ends up being sold for almost $1000 unlocked. Talk about highway robbery but again we consumer make it happen since we barely take the stand against such acts!
@zinj I think it's just that because of tax structures and the U.S. being the capitalist altar boy of the world that prices are almost always lower on fancy electronics in the U.S. Most other places have heavy taxes and stuff like VAT/GST/PST/HST as well as other hidden import tariffs that make most high end electronics and other products a lot more expensive than in the U.S. Hong Kong is probably one of the few places on the planet where you'd regularly find stuff priced similarly or cheaper than the U.S. and even then they have pretty high taxes on certain products (like cars).
For cellular service though the U.S.' large land mass makes us somewhat less competitive since our population density is pretty low.
@cjheechul What's so bad about a contract? You get the phone for cheaper and you can always call retention to renegotiate your contract.
@Hydra You can also get an Iphone4 for any major carrier in Canada. While US customers are just stuck with AT&T
@bstump If by "standing up for what you believe in" you mean disregarding and disrespecting others' beliefs by stepping on them, then no. We Canadians -don't- believe in that.
@DonBellows But they're grandfathered promotions. I subscribed to it the last time they offered it (3GS launch) and it will be in effect for at least the duration of my 3 year contract. Free tethering too, although they've since made that SOP rather than a limited time thing.
@pldube
Wow... I wish these Ontario legislators would get their heads out of their asses and do the same. Fuck the provinces, the Federal Government should bring more protection to consumers.
@Hydra
Come to ireland.... €20 ($26) a month for 15GB of data!!
http://three.ie/ipad/index.htm
@Hydra the norm is $25 for 500MB with Rogers, that 6GB plan is only for when the new iPhone rolls out each year...honestly.
@cjheechul Bell is upgradable after 2 years.
@Hydra
So is Apple including a bumper in the box with these?
@Hydra
I know, this is a total reversal from the iPhone's original release. Remember the kerfuffle that ensued when Canada was trying to limit iPhone data? Suddenly their limited plan offers more bandwidth than my unlimited plan -- and I only have that cause I'm grandfathered.
I liked it better when we were pitying Canada and their backwards Telcos.
@Hydra I thinks it's in large part because of. Well. Candas 70 % frozen tundra with no life what's so ever
@JohnnyDiggMe
Exactly. People complain about contract lengths like they change carriers every 6 months. I've been with Rogers wireless for over 10 years now. So while I would rather not have a 3 year contract, it's really not a big deal. And if I need to get out, the cancellation fee maxes out at $400.
And yet AT&T is raping us with $25 a month for 2GB.
@MisterDBarton They aren't requiring a 3 year prison sentence so ZIP IT!
@MisterDBarton i got my unlimited lol ive had iphone since the 3g
@MisterDBarton Give it up with the 3 year / 2 year contract thing. Nobody is forcing it to you sign the contract, you can pay cash for the phone, too.
@Khris
agree to three years with the option to upgrade every year a varying discount price and have a vastly cheaper plan while paying less upfront to boot or pay out the ass for a more expensive phone with no hope of upgrading during contract. Canada has it alot better in this case
@MisterDBarton
I'm crying for your pain. $25 for 2GB. How sad for you my fellow American. We here have 500MB for $25. This is a limited time offer from Rogers to get more prisoners in their jails. For the rest of smartphone users, $25 for 500MB. You should be happy down south and appreciate the plans you have. Here in Canada, they would be considered crazy.
@Khris Why do you say that? Does that make it better then? So they sign a 2-year contract. Big whoop. It doesn't balance out the fact that AT&T is raping it's customers but you wouldn't know that would you victim?
@rhomaion You've obviously confused me with someone who was complaining. For me, Rogers is the only choice. I will never EVER give Telus a single dime of my money, and Bell is absolutely useless. So the only choice I have is to sign a 3 year contract with Rogers. Since there really is no other choice for me, I don't mind signing a 3 year contract to get a decent price. What am I going to do.....leave and go to Bell or Telus? Not f'ing likely!
Canada has been the rectum of the wireless industry for years. It's nice to see someone else getting clenched for a change!
sigh.... guess I'll be signing my life away for another 3 years..
@tylersmyler Or you could choose the 1 or 2 year options (if there are any, not sure)
@Matt08642 I assure you, there aren't T_T
Damn them all to Bell! D:
$30/month for 6GB? And AT&T has the balls to charge $25/month for 2GB? Lol. Wow. Let's see how quickly customer outrage has these 2GB cap plans flipped on their ass. People will go over their monthly allowance, they will pay the ridiculous overage fees, and they will be pissed off about it.
@kenny goo
Man, this isn't regular for Canadians. It's only for the iPhone and Rogers did it because consumers got pissed off and bitched enough for Rogers to do this. I don't like these "one-time" plans. They're all an excuse to sign 3 years with Rogers. What I want to know is can I use the plan for any smartphone? Probably not...
@ALBGunner04
You have to go on a three year contract in order to get this pricing? You couldn't buy an iPhone off contract through Apple or through the carrier and then get the $30/month for 6GB? If so then I guess I kinda take that back.
@kenny goo
From what I know, Rogers only hands out promotions to those who sign 3-year contracts. Second of all, $25 will regularly get you 500MB with a Rogers data plan. This is just a promotion. They don't even offer more than 5GB on their regular plans.
woah! extra $20 just so you can share the same amount of data?
You would be better off getting a phone that can be turned into a wifi hotspot without the service provider knowing about it.
@GGG
Pretty sad that gouging carriers and their complicit, gouging, device-manufacturing co-conspirators think they can get away with charging you an extra $20 for something you're already paying $30 to get. I use JoikuSpot to share my 6GB Rogers plan and they can go to hell! :)
@GGG They do the same thing with tethering on AT&T. $15 to share the same amount of data that the 2GB plan @ $25 gives you. Both are a rip-off.
@GGG ......*Sigh* triple G i got the joke man don't worry
@champ22
What joke?
