However, the benefit lies in the fact that you do not require any more fossil fuel from the ground. Obviously the caveat is that this assumes the energy for said recycling comes from renewable sources. So, this means that plastics recycling is much better than making new plastics in areas where a large portion of the energy comes from non-fossil fuel areas (E.G. Denmark). Once countries begin to get a larger proportion of their energy from non-fossil fuel sources, then recycling of plastics will definitely be preferred to making new plastics.

schmitty338

Comments on How many trees must die for iWave's Earth-friendly headphones, iPhone cases? Factor in the diesel fuel, the labor to drive the trucks and maintain the trucks, the cost of the labor to sort out the bottles and all of the other recyclable materials.

It is a massive scam. As far as return on investment DoctarPeppar is correct, Aluminum is the only material that makes financial sense to recycle. The other materials cost more, and/or are way more harmful to the environment to recycle than the good they do. I didn't know I had to write out a formal analyses covering every externality. And yes, having those extra trucks does reduce the net gain/loss (depending, as I said above). However, do you think those garbage trucks are now driving around half-full because of recycling programs? No, they aren't - recycling reduces the amount of trash needed to be carried by those garbage trucks, thus far fewer garbage trucks (and land) are required to transport/store it. This in effect almost offsets the need for the recycling trucks because the same number of added garbage trucks would be needed to carry those recyclable goods to the landfill.

You also have to factor in that most waste-storage areas are MUCH further from major waste-producing areas than recycling facilities (E.G. Toronto ships much of its garbage to Michigan, while most of its recycling plants are within an 100km). This further offsets the added energy cost of the recycling trucks, making it a moot point.

schmitty338

Comments on How many trees must die for iWave's Earth-friendly headphones, iPhone cases? There are many benefits of recycling plastics, despite it CURRENTLY taking more energy to recycle them than make new ones. For one, plastics (essentially) NEVER biodegrade. So those billions of tons of plastics produced each year will be here in a million years.
