It's a good day here, because rather than poor 'ol
Sad Moto we get to bust out Happy Moto, as Motorola has released some good news in its Q2 financial report. Earnings were $162 million, up from $26 million
this time last year. That sounds like a big jump, but compared to overall sales of $5.4 billion you can see things are still rather tight -- especially since those sales were down from $5.5 billion the year before and all-important mobile device sales figures dropped six percent to $1.7 billion. Also, these numbers were boosted by a "significant legal settlement" valued at $228 million. Maybe intellectual property wasn't the only thing
Moto got from RIM?
Oh, just shitty 160 million for a world company? LG posted record LOSS!
I guess Android is driving them companies into bankruptcy.
All the power to it. I want that ship to go down fast.
@magadget Did android kill your parents or something? Or is it just that you fear that you may have messed up in hating it needlessly and now you just have to continue to dislike it even though you secretly do. I know your game magadget.
@magadget
Actually, as an iPhone user I don't want Android to go away. Someone's got to keep Apple on their toes.
@magadget
And how's Palm doing these days? OH SHNAP!
@magadget
Dude, why so negative? Any profit is good profit. Besides, hasnt Motorola been losing money for a while now? This is great news for Motorola.
@magadget
Droid phones can make calls holding on your left hand
@magadget
It is great news for all the hundreds thousands of people that have jobs because them. Why would you wish all those people out of work? Maybe when you get old enough to have a job you will see that when companies turn a profit, it benefits more people than you know.
@magadget
Agreed....
Good for motorola but it's small beans compared to the likes of AT&T, Apple, Microsoft, and other companies.
Moto's smartphone shipments up 17% sequentially. Android has done lot of good for them.
Actually many companies in the world are thriving on Android.
1) Adobe
2) Qualcomm
3) Sony Ericsson
4) Motorola
5) HTC
6) Samsung
@magadget congrats moto can we PLEASE get some of that android love on sprint i would love a 2nd phone to go along with my evo
That's great and all, but when apple has 238B market cap, and motorola has 17.85B, it doesn't really matter. Companies are created to do one simple thing. Generate profit. So from a corporate view, apple is a better company.
@notsodumb Quite the contrary
@Siryj Motorola has been on a downward trend for years (since Razr). Now with their Droid range they're on the up. Why the need to compare them to Apple? Just because they're no where near as good as the #1 selling smartphone maker doesn't mean that their profits are worthless.
@Siryj
From a corporate view, market cap means little to begin with. It's mostly just a measure of popularity of the firm and investor sentiment. Apple has higher market cap than Microsoft but generates a third of microsofts profits, so I don't understand your point
@pattyice
Apple's profit is only about 20% less than Microsofts! It will probably go above microsoft's in a year or two.
@magadget
Yes, less competition ftw! I'll never understand the fanboy mentality.
@ashwinkn Exactly. Competition only yields healthy results for consumers, no matter what your cup'o'tea is.
@gerrrg they were bought by hp
Hp is a beast webos is awesome your a troll
@pattyice I was just making a comparison. My point is that investors see a lot of potential in Apple's future. They also generated 3.25 billion last quarter compared to 162 million. I'm not saying 162 million is minuscule, I'm just saying that I expected more from companies such as HTC, Nokia, and other competitors, but then again, Motorola and company sell mostly phones, and Apple sells (overpriced) computers, digital media, along with a number of things. It would be interesting to see who earned the most profit from purely phone sales in Q2.
@RincewindWiz I was replying to the guy who "said that you can hold the droid however you want" but he vanished like a lot of post on engadget. So I was just comparing. 162 mill in the bank is a lot of money, but I thought that Motorola would've raked in a little more because of all the phones they sell, but hey, were in an 'extended recession'.
@notsodumb
Sigh ..
Adobe - How much money they make from android again?
Qualcomm - If you follow financial news you will know that apple contribute more to their earnings. Specially with the success of ipad
Sony Ericsson thriving????? Last time I heard is they are not dead yet. Hardly thriving.
Check your facts plz
@notsodumb Lol android is all they have. Moto will flop like always. You'll see
@WhatDoIKnow
Lol. You really know nothing. You better check your facts.
Qualcomm is not a supplier to Apple iPad/iPhone. It's Infineon.
Secondly, Sony Ericsson produced profit in recent quarters due to Android phones.
@notsodumb
I'd say HTC is the only one thriving because of Android right now. Motorola has the potential of thriving, but right now Android is not sufficient to cover their loss of market share in other areas. Plus, all those buy one, get one offers are probably not helping either - the costs are probably being split between the vendor and Verizon (hence why both of them are showing losses or close to break even numbers)
@Nintendoftl What are you, a f'ing idiot? They got bought out because they were running out of cash from YEARS of losing money.
Droid, does profit. iApple weeps.
@Psyg Sadly, Apple does profit better :).
@Psyg Moto's profit is less than change found in Steve's old undies.
@Psyg
Actually Apple does much more profit. More than every other mobile phone company combined.
@ashwinkn
Apple has huge markups on ALL of their products so I hope they are making good money
@The Shadow At the cost of human lives...
Apple made 20x more profit this quarter...
If you're talking about the foxconn suicides, you are one messed up dude. Just so you know plenty of other big companies employ foxconn. Like hp, motorola, Microsoft, nokia, Sony and Dell.
@Psyg
Motorola cell phone business make $109m loss. Android isn't good business for cell phone companies.
Dang! Lots of companies are starting to rake in the dough!
good for them
@2beers Define "good"
Seems that they just stick the neck out of the water cos of the legal settlement. Their mobile division isnt doing much better.
Maybe next quarter they will fare a "bit" better cos they just sold some division to NSN.
They are selling the lunch to have a dinner.
Nice Motorola! Maybe Moto should move some Android phones over to Sprint, they could use the help.
Yay competition! As a consumer who doesn't have blind loyalty to any company this means better products regardless of who makes them!
And then the comments turn into blah blah vs blah blah.
But seriously in a time where we have all these economic woes it has really been a treat to watch the cellphone and mobile market grow and expand like this.
I'm smiling too.
If only the consumer electronics market effected the entire economy a little bit more.
Hello Profit
nice turnaround, maybe they will spend some money on releasing a firmware update for the Milestone xt720, to increase the processor speed & increas the poor 720p video & photo quality. :o(
@Newwales
more than just 1 of their phones..froyo please!
Behold, the power of advertising. You hear that, Palm? You hear what happens when you actually make an effort to advertise your devices and partner with carriers that aren't sinking ships to promote your flagship product?
@Leindurstit You mean HP?
HAPPY MOTO!
I was using the Droid X yesterday. What a great phone! I am getting it in October. I have been using an iPhone for two years, but the Droid X is so great!
Hell'O MOTO !! ^^
