New Xbox 360 4GB's packaging shows off 250GB HDD upgrade option
It seems like a no-brainer, but at this point Microsoft has yet to confirm a separate 250GB HDD for its new Xbox 360 consoles -- and really, if you're picking up the 4GB model next month, that might come in handy. Newer press shots show a different side of the packaging, however, and if you get a high-res snapshot, you can see that it's touting the various accessories you can buy to enhance your new Xbox 360 4GB experience: wireless controllers, Kinect, and... a 250GB HDD. Now, it could very well be misleading advertising -- such a disc drive already exists, but you have to buy the current slimmed-down model or Halo Reach special edition bundle to get it. Somehow, though, we get the feeling this HDD is destined to be wrapped in separate packaging all by its lonesome -- Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg even insinuated as much not two weeks ago. Only question is, when and for how much?

why not just buy the 250 gb model?
@beastonroids
That's what I'm wondering as well.
To be honest there are always much better options. You can get a 250GB HD for the XBox on eBay for $60 all day long.
@beastonroids
Matte finish and maybe faster times from the 4gb of flash?
@scl23enN4m3 Because it comes with Microsoft kinect, which itself would be $150. So you save $50.
@beastonroids
for me, it all depends on how expensive the HDD is. I want the 250 gb, but I also kind of want Kinect, and to my knowledge they have yet to say anything about the 250 gb bundled with Kinect. If the price the HDD at $150 or less, I'd probably buy the arcade and then the HDD instead of the 250 gb console.
Arcade w/ Kinect + HDD = $299+$150=$449
250 gb Console + Kinect = $299+$150=$449
So if they price the HDD at $150, then my choice really comes down to matte finish or glossy finish. I'm more of a matte finish person so...
And if the HDD is less than $150, then I'm saving money. If it is more than $150, well that would be stupid as 150, or even 100 for that matter, is way too much.
@bjsguess
No you can't. Or rather you can get a 250GB drive for $60 but it's not an MS drive, it's a generic one and if you use that you'll be banned from MS Live.
I just picked up a legit MS branded 125GB drive for my $85 Arcade (thx Target!) for $50 off eBay.
@Wag
Actually, Microsoft is updating their software to allow external drives to work with Xbox Live and to save/load internet games. I read the article on Joystiq not that long ago.
@Wag
lol legit 120GB HDD for $50, I would put good money on that being a nonlegit modded one. They basically all are on eBay and to the best of my knowledge no one has gotten banned for them.
@Wag
Not true, I've been using a WD generic drive for a few months with no issues. If MS starts banning people with WD Scorpio BEVT series drives, they'd be banning about a third of all live subscribers.
@derek533 They didn't bat an eyelid last time they banned over a million people with flashed DVD drives...
@Wag
Actually I have had a 250gb hard drive for quite some time
took a little work to get it loaded like a microsoft drive but wasn't too bad
and no ban hammer for me!!!
Well, that would just plain suck. -_-
@TheRedOne
But it is beautiful. It looks so much sharper than the ugly white blob 360. It actually looks a lot like the bastard child of a PS3 and an XBOX 360 arcade, I guess. The fact is, these things go with expensive AV stuff. And you sure as hell can't hide it in a cabinet. It needs to be pretty.
I think it's beyond pathetic that MS won't let you just shove in a normal HDD. the PS3 really is a totally viable single console and part of the reason I love mine is that I have always been able to have as large a storage as I wanted.
Dang, 360 should have microSD slot.
@Mountainmon
Like the Wii?.
No freaking way.
I own a wii and the sd slot is fine but:
a) sd memories are expensive (even more expensive than the "proprietary xbox harddisk" )
b) sd are limited, 32gb are expensive, 64gb are really expensive (costing x4 the price of a 32gb) and so on.
c) sd sometimes is incompatible, for example SDXC.
d) sd is slow in comparison with a internal disk.
e) sd is more prone to fail than a harddisk.
@magallanes
yeah thats true, but im talking about the cheapo 1GB microSD cards to hold my gamesaves until i get enough money to buy a HDD. XD
@Mountainmon
You can just pick up a USB flash drive.
@Mountainmon Kinda pointless if you ask me, you can easily stream you content from your computer wirelessly, even with a mac.
I wish the 250GB 360 was matte like the 4GB one.
@TheMichaelJackson
I know ... it's like they don't do their R&D very well. They just want their console to shine in the store displays. Just like TVs ... even though when you get them home, we're like ... that TV bezel reflects too much damn light.
@TheMichaelJackson
Same here. When mine does die out, I will be getting a matte 360. Just hope the HDD won't rape my wallet.
Kinect Ready is just misleading because almost every xbox360 is Kinect Ready.
@magallanes
I'm pretty sure that they all are... providing you have some storage space. The 'Kinect Ready' indicates that they have a port that also powers Kinect, eliminating the need for an external power supply (that's no doubt the size of the 360 itself.
Q: "How much?"
A: Too much
yea you might as well but the 250 model....now if they have 60, 120, and 250GB flavors....I'll go ahead and get the arcade and a separate HDD then.
Just got this months paycheck...and I don't even see the numbers, I just see the new Xbox.
@Very Powerfull Codfish - You get paid in Xbox 360s?? i'm jealous....
Could someone please explain what this means...because i don't seem to understand and I'm serious
" such a disc drive already exists, but you have to buy the current slimmed-down model or Halo Reach special edition bundle to get it."
Please reply
@MarcinK The 250 GB HD is removable and are already being make for the 250 GB slim model.
@MarcinK
I actually was confused until I looked at your comment guess they meant "hard" disc drive. By saying it is a "disc drive" I assumed an optical disk drive like most people would.
I was gonna get this, but decided on the Halo Reach Edition. :)
Why does this outdated junk keep being rehashed over and over. Im laughing at all the 250gb hard drive talk as I sit here with 4 Terabytes of hard drive space including 2 SSDs in raid and a DX11 5970 card running 2560 x 1600 res in every game, thats 1600p kiddos. Such elementary school hardware and people keep buying it like its something new and great! I'm here to tell ya its not!
@Soldier1969 I sport an expensive gaming pc too, but you don't see me bragging around.
@Soldier1969 cool story bro. Glad you have all that money to dump into that, you are so cool
@Soldier1969 Oh my God, you are the coolest person ever. You have monies to throw around.
...
I'm getting a 360 not only for gaming, but also for Zune and WMC. It caters a certain need.
@Soldier1969
You have great hardware but no good games (Halo:Reach, Gears 3) to play. Have fun :P
@Soldier1969 guess what, when crysis 2 comes out, i won't need a new xbox to play the game as it was designed. I also don't have to sit in an office chair to play games (and don't give me that bs about hooking it up to the tv. that's completely impractical unless you have a second pc)
lastly, my xbox cost me $300. your pc cost you $2000 with that gpu and those ssd's.
@daytripper .... You shouldn't of used then as an example almost all xbox games port to pc. . But yeah
But yeah the guy is sad I'm pretty sure every console owner knows pcs pack more punch but I'm more then satisfied playing ps3 more then pc now days. At least we get more games of quality(360 owners included) the pc is to pirate heavy so publishers are going console to make sure they can pay the games off.
honestly does it matter, now the 360 can be treated like a ps3 allow users to put what ever hdd in there, i'm going to try and put one of those new 1tb drives in there i already have 640gb on my old 360
@silencedjazz1992
Haven't kept up on this but link to where you can mod other sizes of hard drives other than stock sizes? As far as I know 250GB is the biggest you can buy or mod.
@silencedjazz1992
Not really, the new Xbox HDD is also proprietary. Hopefully modders can mod this one as well.
could they not think of a better name than "4GB"? that seems very confusing. someone should have said "hey, maybe we shouldn't name it that, because GB already means something else"
I just pre order mine at best buy aug 3 cant wait
Cant wait till people start mass producing look-a-likes of the hard drive shells and selling them on eBay so people can not get ripped off by Microsoft proprietary bullshit.
I have a newbie question: Does this have Blu-Ray?
@LloydChiro
No and No.
@cdf74dc9
Thanks.
in the new xboxs there is a bay for a harddrive. Meaning that the arcade will have 4 gb of on board memory and Microsoft will sell a 250gb hard drive that you can slip into that empty bay. You can actually take the hard drive you have for your current 360, take it out of the shell, and place it in your new xbox 360 slim. It could void your warranty though.
I'm still buying the older 256 MB Arcade. I'll use my 100 GB Maddog drive for storage and my laptop as a Wi-Fi adapter.
ive just added the 250gb hdd to my old xbox pro model (the 250gb being the same weight as the 20gb it seems!)
it was being sold at £60 although officially is about £80.. just hit the shops all over over the uk, and the price of the 60gb and 120gb has dropped as this includes the transfer cable. still too dear but at least you dont worry about filling up the hdd with a couple of downloads
