The "bandwidth" isn't being drawn from Northern California. They have backbone onramps all over the nation. WiMax (and really, any other tower technology) communicates with your device in bursts of high speed data transmission. That's why there's additional ms latency in ping times.

Wireless technology isn't going to cut the mustard for any FPS online gaming because of this problem. Most everything else is probably ok. Remember, for the most part, online gaming doesn't implicitly require fat data pipes, though there are some games that do. Sprint always had a 5gb cap on their 3g, though various anecdotal stories can be found that they don't enforce it too much. So far, the 3rd party companies rebranding Clear and selling it as their own wireless broadband(Cox, Time Warner, Comcast, now BB) have offered the same unlimited tiers. WiMax and LTE are certainly 4G, as in fourth generation, defined with: "The nomenclature of the generations generally refers to a change in the fundamental nature of the service, non-backwards compatible transmission technology and new frequency bands."
Other wise it can also me known as a marketing tool.
And yes, I do know that the ITU-R made up specs for what 4G is supposed to be. But you really can't define a generation before it's time. Those specs may sit on the table until 5G for all we know.

Sorry for the rant.

ryan.moore

Comments on Best Buy partners with Clearwire, will Connect customers to 4G

Super frustrated with the caps that the service providers are putting on us. The speed is pretty comparable to DSL and signal is rarely an issue since they went 4G, although rain and bad weather beat the bejeevus out of the signal in the 3G days. I can't see them charging more for Clear through Best Buy than through anywhere else ($40/month, no cap). My guess is we are seeing the quiet replacement of Best Buy Connect.

ChargerIIC

Comments on Best Buy partners with Clearwire, will Connect customers to 4G

Why does the author ask for a CAP???? 4G Clearwire has not had any caps for over a year now... why assume and ask for one via Best Buy?

genen

Comments on Best Buy partners with Clearwire, will Connect customers to 4G

@verruckt8 No rant its true.. unless you are some insanely smart radio engineer and can invent some new wireless standard ofdm/ ofdma is the fourth generation of wireless..
