Devon Works Tread 1 belt-driven, bulletproof wristwatch tested, proven to actually tell time (video)
The last time we saw the Devon Works Tread 1 wristwatch it existed only in digital form, rendered and swirling about with respect neither mass nor volume. Now it has come to reside in the physical plane, and aBlogtoRead has managed to get one of its belt-driven manifestations to test out. Naturally it's a little less pristine looking than the computer-generated version and, pictured next to a fleshy hand, we can now see just how big the thing is -- its crown actually large enough to wear on your head. For $15k you at least know you're getting your money's worth when it comes to raw materials, but whether you agree that this is a "novel timepiece that will make a satisfying addition to any collector's treasure trove" depends on your sense of taste, depth of pockets, and desire to make your forearms look meek and feeble.

Just the thing for the girlfriend.
@DistantHere If she's a SHE-MAN then YES.
@Juggernaut408 Or She-Hulk
@DistantHere at least it will protect her delicate she-man wrists from he-man bullets
@DistantHere
"Just the thing for the girlfriend" to give ME!
@ok Android looks so ugly its fun
Its not, I'm pretty sure this thing will crumble like an old cookie when nailed with a proper caliber.
@DistantHere : China! We need you on this right now! :)
@ok Android looks so ugly its fun So that you can buy two of them and pretend to be Wonder Woman.
@One Love so true
@tikigawd so the bullet will bounce off the watch and hit you in the eye
@DistantHere The tick tock sound would quickly get rid of her. Good idea.
@ok Android looks so ugly its fun
You never know. Well, maybe bulletproof pocketwatch is more protective.
And it is really cool.
@DistantHere
SHE-THING! She-Thing not She-Hulk. Watch Justice Friends again.
@Kurian Or perhaps it is... She-Hulk
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/She-Hulk
nice but not for 15k
@Quetzalcoatl
The geek inside me would sport this watch in a heartbeat. Alas the "depth of my pockets" is too shallow!
@Quetzalcoatl
I'd hate to live in a world where I couldn't buy a belt driven watch for roughly the same price as a golf.
That is very cool.
This is really cool...
If only these pants had pockets to hold money... :(
Love the engineering behind it. Wish I could have one, but come on, 15k? that's bull. Bring it down to a few hundreds and I'll get it.
Nice, where can I pick up at KIRF? I'm looking at you China!
For 15k someone would cut your hand off to snatch that.
Time for the $40 knockoffs to show up on ebay so everyone can have one!
WOWZERS!!!
@JStar GoGo Gadget !!
After I paint it gold, my Wonder Woman outfit will be nearly complete.
Stunning. It would go well with my belt driven fan. I hope my annual bonus covers this one. Seriously thought, a glorious piece
that thing looks confusing.
@DoomLight
Are you sure you are on the right blog man??
@DoomLight
I agree, e85 compliant?
WOW! Just love it!
WOW! That is so affordable!
So, it's been proven to tell time... but has it been proven to be bulletproof???
@md5sum
ah, but will it blend?
The only things I don't like about it are the price and the music in the video. I'd get a more consumer friendly version at around 100 bucks.
Wow could have used this last time I got shot in the wrist.
How do you change the battery?
Just wondering, because those "thick" treads appear to a wee bit more of a battery killer than conventional watch gears. is it self-winding, perhaps? (i'd be really impressed if it were)
@NoNameJim found the answer to my question at the source blog:
"Despite the fact that it has plenty of moving parts, this isn't a mechanical watch in the traditional sense. It uses a micro-controller board, rechargeable battery, and small motors to power the movement, as opposed to being a purely mechanical machine that is spring powered."
They claim the battery can go two weeks between charges. Though the apparent ruggedness of the watch would make it appear ideal for outdoorsman, I think the requirement to plug it in every two weeks pretty much eliminates it from consideration for die hard survivalists (and soldiers, wilderness researchers, third world aid workers, etc). A shame IMO. Looks like they just created the watch version of a Hummer... (in all senses)
@NoNameJim You didn't read the source page, did you? It comes with its own wireless powering station. Think of it as the charger for the Palm Pre, you set it on a little stand and let it do its thing. The battery lasts for two weeks but pushing and holding the crown for a few seconds shuts off the watch, while it continues to still keep track of time internally.
@FermentedDischarge Not sure if you wrote your reply before or after my own went up, but yeah I did read the source blog. Even with the power-saving option, the fact that it's gotta be recharged with at least some regularity, kinda kills it's practical usage in the most rigorous settings it's designed for. (even a fancy induction charger still has to be plugged into something)
Interesting design, but like the Hummer, if you ever see someone actually wearing this thing, chances are they've never actually even been camping :)
It's ugly.. and for 15k I could have a much nicer watch or two than this..

You'll have plenty left over to spend on booze.
I almost HAVE to get this, since my name is Devon. HAHAH!
One of my customized Miatas (N/A) has the entire interior/dash package from Devon Works, and it's simply stunning.
These guys are truly masters at their craft!
Cool, but for 15k, I would expect an AM/PM indicator.
@Brystr0 It doesn't have the date either.
My name is Bond...
oh my holy moly, that's the kind of watch I'd get if i had the money, but i don't, totally worth the 15k and If i would win the lottery i might get it
ill wait for the KIRF version but SO want one
