EVO 4G's Froyo firmware was available for download, manual install (update)
Update: HTC just shot us a message to clarify that this is not the final ROM version and that the company is strongly recommending not to install this. Additionally, a request has been put in to remove the file from the server, so if you still want to try at your own risk, better download now while it's still available.
Update 2: ... and now it's gone. We're sure crafty internet users can still find the file lingering elsewhere, but you won't be getting it from HTC's servers this weekend. You know the old saying, ye who snoozes, something something, tough luck.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

First to 4g first non-stock to froyo
@Fenikkusu Yea, its sad when we get it first but the stock droid has to wait an extra week. Oh well remorse time over, time to run some benchies!
@ok Android looks so ugly its fun
Oh I'll gladly try LTE where can I sign up? ...oh wait...
@ok Android looks so ugly its fun LTE is not true 4G either you idiot
@ok Android looks so ugly its fun
Yeah, like the 7.5mbps down speeds I've been getting here in Boston. Haters gonna hate
@ok Android looks so ugly its fun
and you got owned and overwhelmed by your lack of IQ and your few remaining brain cells if you got any of em
@ok Android looks so ugly its fun
Sprint's 4G tested in Houston: 8mbps down / 2.5 mbps up
Anaheim, CA (5 down/2.5 up)
San Jose, CA (5 down/2.5 up)
Lexington, NC (5 down/2.5 up)
Richmond, VA (5 down/2 up)
These are actual tests from users with Evo 4Gs in those areas.
You are nothing but a stupid fanboy with nothing better to do in your life :)
@ok Android looks so ugly its fun
Wow! You really are a loser! How many email accounts have you gone through so you can still troll on Engadget?
@ok Android looks so ugly its fun
you're an idiot. LTE is NOT real 4G either
"The pre-4G technology 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) is often branded "4G", but the first LTE release does not fully comply with the IMT-Advanced requirements."
lmao you got owned by AT&T/Verizon marketing.
@ok Android looks so ugly its fun
Actually. Devices are addressed using IPv6. With speeds over that of HSPA/CDMA which designates it as 4G.
HSPA+ is 4G-type speeds, without the IPv6 addressing...therefore it's not full 4G.
Do you just enjoy trolling?
@ok Android looks so ugly its fun.. Does any of it matter? It seems the less intelligent you are the more brand loyalty people have. I have Sprint but damn I love me not a fucking brand. Android, Apple, Verizon, Att you are not you're phone!
@ok Android looks so ugly its fun
It's THEORETICALLY 3 times faster. Not actually 3x faster. In reality it's download speeds are on par with WiMax. You really don't keep up with the wireless industry very much do you? For someone that is going on and on about you would think you knew what you were talking about.
"Verizon continues to say it will launch its fourth-generation, super-fast Long Term Evolution wireless network to cover 100 million people by the end of this year, but it’s also been clear that it expects its LTE network speeds to be just 5Mbps."
Show me how that's three times faster than the 4.2Mbps I get on my Evo?
This thread is awesome. It's rare that a troll gets bodyslammed this hard, but this guy insists on digging his hole deeper and deeper.
@Fenikkusu
Reminds me of the ads I've been seeing for the Evo... almost all of which are terrible actually. Especially since the HTC Aria ads are decent.
The worst is the "phone envy" ad where a woman is worried to take out her phone because she doesn't want to feel inferior to another woman. It's amazingly terrible as an ad, doesn't really even show the Evo, and generally just sends the message of "this looks fancy and you need to have it as a status symbol" which doesn't even work since, honestly, the trendy phone of the moment to people judging by such criteria is the iPhone 4. It also fails a basic tenet of advertising by spending more time focused on a negative than a positive. It says "worry about what kind of phone you have", not "buy this phone because it's great!"
The other ad that I've been seeing more recently (and your comment reminded me of) is also pretty vague and spends a lot more time talking about how it's "first". It rarely even says "Evo" or shows the phone instead trying to push how revolutionary and advanced the phone is. To the point that my girlfriend actually thought it was an ad for a phone called "First" or something similar. Especially when they could have talked about how it was an evolved phone or "rEvolutionary" (as much as I hate mixed-case) phone and reinforced the name.
Both of these feel like they were made by people who never spent a day in their life studying advertising or marketing.
Sure, the Evo might be big among people who are in the know, but that's still pretty small. While it's currently selling out if they want it to last they need to... well, I don't want to say advertise more because who wants that, but they should be a lot smarter about their ads. Of the phones I've actually seen ads for the Evo is probably the least represented.
@Belgand
I don't understand how your girlfriend doesn't get that the commercial that says "first" a lot is about the EVO, especially since at the end of the commercial it says, "What will you do with the EVO, the first 4G phone?" Is she a blonde? I'm guessing so.
@CoyM
One thing you left out of your post were the IEEE standards. For WiMax, or LTE to be called 4G they need to meet the IEEE requirements. WiMax already meets those requirements with e and m on the way. LTE does not meet IEEE requirements, and the next version is not even going to be discussed for approval until later this year. If it does meet IEEE requirements niether VZW not AT$T have plans to introduce it for another 3 - 5 years.
Meanwhile the speeds you are seeing with WiMax are throttled. With a software update on the device as well as at the towers current WiMax will be able to more than double the best speeds that LTE can muster.
Add to that that WiMax is already implemented in over 150 countries means that it has a huge base before LTE even comes to market.
@Fenikkusu
I went to Logan Airport in Boston yesterday and go no 4g service...I was so upset. Where in Boston is this so called 4g wireless....
@jroff he started it...attention cupertino hoes of america....at&t and Daddy Jobs said have their money by ten o clock tonight or get "magically" pimpslap.
Daddy Jobs: where's my money bitch
Android so ugly: sorry daddy nothing tonight
Daddy Jobs: do I have to revolutionize your ass or just drop your signal strength altogether
And so the android domination begins.
Hells yeah...
Froyo, here I come baby!
- Sent from an EVO 4G
@Steve Jobs Jr
YEAHH, that's right. Im going to buy Real Froyo to celebrate this!!
Android 2.2 is the best OS ever on mobile devices. Nothing can compare to it.
So ENJOY people who have FROYO !1
@Steve Jobs Jr
sent from my computer because my EVO is busy updating
Already a rooted version available. AndroidCentral dot com has the link to the XDA thread for the 2.2 version for everything to keep root.
@kandekilla wait, why can't we just go to the xda thread straight away?
@kandekilla
Is it better than CyanogenMod6? I'm half tempted to switch back simply because WiMax is starting to become usable in my area and no C&P support.
@xeren figured it was easier for a lot of people to just jump to androidcentral to hit the link than digging through xda. not everyone knows of xda.
@devildrifterx Its just different roms. CM6 is an cyanogen release with all its glory. The one on XDA has all the stuff of the normal evo rom, sense etc. More of a pick your poison thing.
Cyanogen doesn't have 4g yet, and the battery life is shit. The newest avalaunch is where its at for now. At least until cm6 gets a little closer to release
Hopefully the Incredible is soon to follow...
The Android Police, they come to me in my head ...
If I want to update, do I need to backup everything, such as my apps and their data, or does it just carry over?
@cyco Just did the manual update and everything is just fine. Its not a total rom reflash like putting on CM6. Its just an update to the existing system.
@ok Android looks so ugly its fun
God. Do you seriously refresh your page every second just so you can comment on Android negatively every chance you get..? I kinda feel bad for you.
@ok Android looks so ugly its fun
Yep. But at least I can add widgets, unlike an other OS.
@ok Android looks so ugly its fun Dam my EVO is great it Print's fuking money and has Froyo now, life is good....
@ok Android looks so ugly its fun
no life confirmed
Waiting for a n1 version
@FritzJ92 N1 version? of Android 2.2? This is sarcasm right?
Bring on Froyo for Incredible!
evo 4g+froyo+flash=NERDGASIM!!!!!!
@ok Android looks so ugly its fun I am going to laugh my arse off if that wasn't you that set that as your avatar.
@ok Android looks so ugly its fun
did you know that google makes more money off android than microsoft does?
@owen66
Duh... Of course Google makes more off of Android! Maybe that's because Google owns Android and not Microsoft.
@ok Android looks so ugly its fun
Hey, are you the same guy that got band from Engadget for being a troll? Prepare to be down ranked into..... well, you know the rest.
Not too excited about the features for this update. Seems like a lot of waiting for.. basically nothing.
@Bgrngod
Wait until you use it, you should notice a big improvement. Well, this is coming from someone who uses Froyo on an HD2...
@Bgrngod I would say the MS Exchange support will be significant to many.
I'm guessing you were hoping for a fix to the crappy battery life? I can understand that. I think you are SOL on that and this hardware. From what I hear part of the issue is a design flaw in the receiver like they had with the HTC Diamond. If you had the CDMA version your reception bars would very between no bars and all bars while stationary on a cloudless day. This would kill the battery quickly as it couldn't determine how much power to use to try and get signal.
@boe
Why do people claim the Evo has crappy battery life? There have been days of light use where I left the phone unplugged for over two full days. And today with heavier use I have had 10 hours used and it still has 50% remaining. On a bad day I get about 12 hours out of it, which is still within the range of being acceptable. The only time I have ever got less than 10 is when I was roaming while out of state, roaming kills the battery rather quickly.
Verizon, you're now on the clock to release froyo for the incredible. The evo came out a MONTH after the incredible. GET WITH IT.
haters gon hate
(haters being the non-evo havers)
