It's about PCI DSS software compliance and physical network compliance. It doesn't mention anything about hardware encryption which is where the industry is heading in regards to all Magnetic Stripe Readers. While Square's payment app might be PCI compliant not store card numbers there's nothing preventing a jailbroken iphone from doing so. That is unless the information is encrypted before it get's to the phone. Which is where the hardware encryption comes into play.

FYI - information on PCI DSS - https://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/

If you aren't already aware, your card information is encoded in plain text on the magnetic strip on your credit cards. Most MSR's just act as a keyboard to the device it's attached to - as if you are typing it in over a keyboard (for practical purposes as an example). Depending on the track read (there are 2 to 3 tracks on most cards) depends on the information that is stored. For example one stores card number and expiration date, while another stores card holders name and card number and expiration date. Newer MSR's actually encrypt the data before it leaves the MSR and the device its attached to or payment program that uses it must have the correct key to decode it.

On fixed point of sale devices or stations this isn't as big a concern (although it's still a big concern) as with mobile devices such as phones - particularly a smart phone like the iphone. All someone has to do is use a jailbroken iphone and have an app that interfaces with the device to have a skimmer. Or they might have a background app that captures the data before it's handed off to square's payment app and you wouldn't be any wiser.

Coupled with the marketing being targeted at kiosks, and smaller vendors, with potentially lower requirements for signing up, it might not take much for someone not so honest to get an account and hardware. So with little effort or cost, it can make it pretty easy to start stealing card numbers to sell them or use them.

tinball

Comments on Square payment system is coming back in full force by 'late summer'

@tinball Square isn't even listed on the PCI PA-DSS site as an approved app. Yet they claim it is approved. I have never seen an interchange rate that high before actually. In most manual entry cases like the Authorize.net card not present setup rates are set by the merchant provider so in this case you should consider shopping around a bit to get better rates for your account. The norm would be 2.10% for Qualified and at most 3.4% Non Qualified... What qualifies a transaction as Qualified is the need to match all data as in CC#, Exp, CVV2 and Zip Code. Those all match you pay less.

On a flip side some merchants like myself hate to carry additional hardware that needs attaching to the iphone and not to mention the possibility of having it get lost. I signed up the day - practically the hour - that the Android version of the software was released (also the day the iPhone version was released), and I'm still waiting here without a way to use a credit card in my business. I had told several clients in APRIL that I'd soon be accepting credit cards. I now look a little silly because of that promise. I don't accept any sort of "by the end of summer" prediction. I accept "we're sending out your card reader today." But like I said, I'll believe it when I see it.

Also, Jack Dorsey needs to smile more. All seem to have their unique fit. Although Square seems really intriguing, it is limited in that it leverages every merchant's "potential" risk and therefore the better, less risky merchants have to pay in higher fees for the risk that other merchants may inherently have. So, although the reader is free and the app is clean and nice, we had to choose a more secure app and reader. Our recommendation would be to check out www.simplyswipeit.com if you are a more solid merchant and you are interested in an iPhone solution for payments they - by far and away - were the best solution. We could use our existing payment provider and therefore got the lowest rates and the interface is very much designed for merchants (not to mention it uses MagTec's secure reader). We did a lot of research...we do a lot of transactions and needed to get it right. For what it's worth. Thanks Engadget for providing great insight!

Oscar Meyer
