I am saddened that HP decided to make printers their first webOS products to hit the market. On a side-note, SUPER EXCITED to find an article that troll hasn't posted on yet. Any device that's running Android has potential to do a multitude of different things well, so I wouldn't get too hung up on the claim that, "E-reading is a major focus" of the Zeen Tablet, because if you'll recall, almost the exact same claims were made regarding Apple's iPad before it's launch (something about changing the entire print industry... etc.), yet the reality is that serving as an 'eReader' is but one of its many functions.

Seriously now, why would Hp go through the trouble of integrating a capacitive multi-touch screen, integrated media card reader, video out, web camera, Nook services, printer-dock integration, and a host of other distinctly computing functions into something that's only going to be an eReader?

Probable Answer: They Wouldn't

Interesting that they confused a user interface with an OS...then sprung for more than a BILLION dollars for it.

As Tim Brown said, they plan to build an eco-system of devices that will all work with one another on the same platform. They now have an OS and interface that can work together and accross device platforms. HP wants to come out with complete solutions this time and I for one think it will be facinating to see. Phones that work with Tablets that work with Printers that work with Phones that work with Printers (and probably other devices). Apps that run accross each one of these devices as well.

Tealpoint knows UIs.

A couple million for a UI very similar to webOS', some development costs that are also present with webOS (actually, webOS development costs will be significantly greater), and HP has an OS across platforms with a common look-n-feel UI.

They were enamored with the webOS UI and made a horrifically expensive mistake buying the whole shebang for a BILLION dollars before they have to start development efforts.

Totally silly and insane.

I also don't need a printer, but some people do, we don't know if this would add any cost (it'll add price in the short-term, but maybe not much), if it doesn't then it's a definitely plus. Then there are people who would be able to do things like snap a bunch of photos, wirelessly sync them to their home computer, have 18 printouts at home to give to the grandparents of their children before the grandparents leave for the night; all without having to wait at home for the 18 pages to print and having to keep the files stored on their packed devices.

HP just spent $1.4 billion on Palm, Primarily for webOS. What I don't like about this concept is that the lifespan of a handheld device is much shorter then the lifespan of a printer. I have an HP 2605dtn color laserjet printer (great printer!) for home printing needs... and I have used it since 2006. In that same time period, I have gone through at least 3-4 pda/tablet/phones.

Is HP continuing to try to sell "disposable" printers with "disposable" tablets? Or will they actually webconnect their decent, long-lived printers, and then guarentee a tablet form factor which will continue to be upgraded at that rapid pace that current smartphones/tablets are upgraded? Because I would hate for my printer to become obselete 12 months later because the current generation of tablets won't dock to them.

What happens if I am using the hp tablet for reading, and someone wants to print on the printer? Are they out of luck? Will the tablet become just another remote to play hide and seek with (yes, I have small children)?

Meh. The more I think about this, the less excited I am. Touchscreens and controllers aren't really expensive until you try to bundle them in a hand-held, potable, sleek form factor. I would rather not see detachable tablets on my printers.

I suspect that this is one way for HP to jump-start their tablet sales. I think WebOS will find a very profitable place at HP as gadget operating system.
