Lo Res Project builds abstract low-poly models of luxury cars and other trinkets
Triangles. Their scarcity has been the bane of gamers since the dawn of time (circa 1993) and every single leap forward in graphical performance has been tied to increasing polygon counts and smoothing out curvatures. Color us amused, then, to see someone going in the opposite direction for art's sake. The Lo Res Project from United Nude scans in 3D models of everyday objects -- like a Lamborghini Countach, we've all got one of those, right -- before scaling down the complexity of the resulting data to achieve radical-looking angular representations of the original as above. The best part, however, is that if they're really happy with their digital outcome, the designers go and build the damn thing in the real, living, breathing world. Some might describe it as sophistication through simplification, but we just see it as one of the truly geekiest ways to decorate your abode. reckon they will do a low poly f 117, too?
@Wiggy Fuzz
And now we know what Optimus Prime's turds look like..
Thanks
@Wiggy Fuzz looks like a Vertu.
@Wiggy Fuzz Your polygons are showing sir.....all three of them that is....
@Wiggy Fuzz
Smart man... very smart... +1
Perhaps they should do low res verisons of the nissan cube, honda element and ford flex?
Oh wait...
@Seb6554 hahaha yeah....
@Seb6554 Don't forget Scion xB
@Seb6554
add the Pontiac Aztek to that list?
@Seb6554
Tata Nano.
I wonder what Batman's car/tank/awesomepieceofmetal would look like.
Seems like Batman is going to get his brand, new shiny Batmobile. Hell yeah.
Are they tried to decrease the world lag? I'm sure god's gpu can render more than that.
@Accelerator
If real is what you can feel, smell, taste and see, then 'real' is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain...this isn't world lag, its matrix lag and the machine's don't want to upgrade
@T0astedP0Ptart Yes, the matrix needs more power and are about to put booster cables on your tits.....you big battery
@Accelerator Not if he used the CryEngine
This version looks much better than the original!
@Mert
A sarcastic comment about Lamborghini coming from a Ferrari avatar guy. I'm sure its not biased at all. :)
Mmm, this is pretty stupid, they could at least add some smoothing by altering vertex normals like has happened in 3D games for years. Plus, low-poly art has always been about the textures and a bit of smoke and mirrors. A lump of harsh triangles is just bollocks.
And I hate that website for opening unexpected links.
@cheeseisakindofmeat
Eh, I like it with the old-school polys. Needs some texture, but it makes me think of classic Descent models. It needs to be matte, too; those reflections kill the software-rendered vibe. :p
@cheeseisakindofmeat 'always'? since when is your 'always'?
There was definitely a time before Gouraud shading, never mind textures.
Come to that, why are they making these models solid? Shouldn't they be made of literal wire frames? :)
Man I'd love a set of the lo-res glassware.
They say on their site that they're working with another company to develop software that will automatically do this with arbitrary 3D models. I'm sure it's going to be for industrial design and cost bajillions of dollars, but with the price of 3D printers coming down the next few years you could make some pretty amazing sculpture. How simple can you make an object and still retain it's recognizable form?
@thinmac
actually with these models you could just use a regular printer to print the structure on paper and then you can fold it the right way. no need for a 3D printer :)
Why the hell is the site called "United Nude?"
(clears browser history)
Ewwwwwwwww.
I tried to look from different angles but its still ewwwwwwwwwww....
....or make something totally random and abstract in the real world and let software upscale it and match it to something else....would be about as interesting and well, probably more useful to boot.
Don't see the point, it's not like you would be able to tell the difference between this version and some random sculpture that was loosely based of the general shape of a Countach.
My virgin eyes!!!
@kof2000 virgin eyes? pffft ur on Engadget, there's no such thing.
Knight Rider 2099!!!
These people love booze.
Wow, this was features on Giz and Jalopnik weeks ago.
Am I the only one who is not even slightly impressed? I like the idea, but it seems to me that they just used a multi-res reduction modifier on these models and didn't make ANY changes. The point of low polygonal count models is that they still resemble their original counterpart in as few polygons as possible - these just take stock models and use an automated system to reduce the poly count - then drag the slider further to see it look blockier.
(Look at their site)
Guys, take some time with your models and then release some proper glassware. I'll buy it.
I get it! The outside is the girl with the make up, the inside inside is w/o makeup! Clever if you ask me ....^.^
@giuvilas88 I think you should include Windows Phone 7 in your last question. (Which OS do you think will be most prevalent in the future?)
that car really doesn't belong with the background.
Cool. It's like playing an Atari Jaguar in real life!
Check out the wine glass. Second on: new video game, sixth: old video game, eighth: Star Trek.
