I have both a iPhone 4 and Canon T2i ( 550D ) and the canon has a purpose that iPhone 4 or other phones with nice camera inside can do. For one thing these cameras have exchangable lens which alow more options.

Also, Canon hasn't had any articulated displays in it's DSLRs, so it's about time (I've had the S series P&S zooms with articulated LCDs since they first came out). There have been times when I've felt that I would have benefited from these things, such as when taking pics over people's heads, taking very close to the ground pics, or things like that, where the viewfinder or normal LCD don't work well, if at all. And like some people mentioned, many prefer this type of display for video capture (I prefer an EVF/OVF, but that's not possible). Of course, it depends on the person. I'm not that much of a photographer, but I rarely use the live view mode. If someone else really does use it, or is in situations where shooting over their head is very useful (?), then this would be a great feature.

Nobody's forcing you to use these features. If you don't like them, don't use them, or buy a different camera. It's not as if the feature would get in your way or hamper/cramp your photography. Or is it that people are afraid that it would make them look less "pro" if it had some usability features of the common P&S? It's pretty simple for the DSLRs. The more numbers before the "D", the more consumer-ish the camera is. 3 digits is a Rebel, 2 digits is a prosumer, 1 digit is professional.

Oh, and the 4-digits camera, the 1000D (Rebel XS) is a stripped down version of the 3-digit.
