And of course we need to remember that Kinect itself only scans at 30Hz - in pad-driven games, latency leaps from a minimum of 66ms to 100ms when frame-rate drops down to 30FPS from 60FPS. A lower scan rate absolutely translates into higher latency."

You can hype this thing up until the cows come home, but its not at all accurate and will _NEVER_ be accurate in its current incarnation.. This is how the ubisoft your shape game works, it doesnt even use the "skeletal tracking".

There are plenty of demos of the ps3 eye doing skeletal mapping (upper body very accurately) with a metallic exo-skeleton and also doing head tracking even very accurate face tracking, its all in their SDK as well.. The facial tracking is all from algorithms developed by the Sony Camera division, they use it to detect when some one is smiling for a picture for example and this has all been merged into the ps3 SDK, no idea how much processing it would swallow up, but its there for developers to build into move games..

McDuck (Scrooged)

Comments on

@McDuckScrooged

Skeletal tracking is done using data from the depth sensor, not the color camera. Doing FULL BODY skeletal tracking using a plain image from a camera is next to impossible for the current state of software today. It would be like building a simulation of the human visual cortex, running it on a giant supercomputer, and training it with years of experience interpreting human poses of all different races, clothing styles, hair styles, body type, lighting conditions, various room configurations, etc. Its way beyond what we can do today with machine vision. Relying on depth data allows the software to ignore all that, and just get the general shape of the object separated cleanly from the background. It makes the tracking more simple and robust (not to say its easy though).

Face smile detection and the like you see in digital cameras today even.
